Charges in Stolen Patrol Car Case

This afternoon, King County Prosecutors filed charges — Robbery In The Second Degree and Attempting To Elude A Pursuing Police Vehicle — against the defendant in this case. As of this writing, the defendant remains in custody on $300K, the amount requested by King County Prosecutors at first appearance.

From the public charging documents:

In this case, the defendant was seen walking on I-5 in north Seattle in broad daylight. Washington State Patrol troopers went to great lengths to assist the defendant off the roadway in a peaceable way, including talking to him, offering to drive him to a light rail station and pay for his fare, and finally escorting the defendant so that he could walk to an interstate exit while they followed behind in their patrol cars. Despite the troopers’ efforts, the defendant ran back onto the busy interstate. When the victim stopped in her patrol car to talk to the defendant, the defendant opened the victim’s car door, pulled her out of the car, threw her to the ground, and got into the driver’s seat. The defendant then locked the doors and drove away at a high rate of speed.

The defendant drove the victim’s stolen patrol car for an extended period of time until troopers caught up to him and signaled for him to stop. He did not stop and continued to drive recklessly on I-5. The defendant’s reckless driving was briefly halted after troopers executed a PIT maneuver, but even then he turned to drive the wrong way on I-5. The defendant was finally stopped after a pursuing trooper turned his own car into the defendant’s path to hit the defendant’s car, injuring himself on the airbag that deployed in the process.

Defendants remain innocent until proven guilty.
