The Constant Need to Please
I often wonder when I learned to be so afraid of disappointing people. I don’t know exactly when it happened. Maybe it happened slowly. Maybe I felt too many times that I was only truly good when everything around me was fine, when I smiled, when I helped, when I didn’t complain, when I didn’t cause problems.
So I learned to hide myself.
I learned to say, “I’m fine,” even when I wasn’t. I learned to smile even when I was falling apart inside. I learned to say, “Of course, I’ll handle it,” when what I really wanted to say was, “I need someone too.”
But I was afraid.
I was afraid that if I showed how tired I really was, people would see me as weak. I was afraid that if I said what I truly felt, I would be too much. I was afraid that if I said no, someone would be disappointed in me. And perhaps what I was most afraid of was that if I wasn’t always kind, patient, understanding, and available, one day people simply wouldn’t need me anymore.
So I kept adapting.
To other people.
To situations.
To expectations.
Just not to myself.
So many times, I paid more attention to how someone else was feeling than to how I was feeling. If someone was sad, I wanted to comfort them. If someone was angry, I wanted to make peace. If someone pulled away, I immediately searched for the fault within myself.
And I didn’t even notice how often I was abandoning myself just so other people wouldn’t be disappointed in me.
Perhaps the most painful part is that for a long time, I thought this was love.
I thought being a good person meant enduring everything.
Always being there.
Not asking for too much.
Not saying no.
Forgiving.
Understanding everyone.
Meanwhile, more and more things were hurting me.
I just never talked about them.
What could I have said?
That I was tired of always having to be strong?
That sometimes I wanted someone to ask me if I was really okay?
That sometimes I needed someone too?
That sometimes I wished someone would look for me, not because they needed something from me, but simply because they wanted me in their life?
That sometimes I wanted someone to choose me, not because I was useful, but simply because I was me?
For a long time, I couldn’t even admit these things to myself.
Instead, I tried to become even better.
More patient.
More understanding.
More useful.
More perfect.
Maybe then I could finally be sure that people wouldn’t leave.
Maybe then I wouldn’t disappoint anyone.
Maybe then I would finally be enough.
But the truth is, a person gets tired of spending their entire life proving that they are worthy of being loved.
I got tired too.
I got tired of explaining every single no.
I got tired of spending an entire evening wondering whether I had hurt someone because of one wrong sentence.
I got tired of understanding everyone else’s mistakes while being unable to forgive my own.
I got tired of everything looking fine on the outside while inside I was constantly afraid that I had messed something up again.
And maybe I’m finally beginning to understand that there isn’t something wrong with me because I’m too sensitive.
I simply spent too long trying to please everyone.
I spent too long believing that I had to earn love.
I spent too long thinking that people would only stay if I never disappointed them.
Now I’m trying to learn that I don’t have to always be good to be loved.
I can be tired.
I can be uncertain.
I can be angry.
I can say no.
I can make mistakes.
And I can still be worthy.
I don’t know when this constant need to please will disappear from me. Maybe it never will completely. Maybe there will always be a part of me that is afraid someone will be disappointed in me.
But now I want to make sure that at least I don’t disappoint myself.
I don’t want to abandon myself anymore just so other people will stay.
I don’t want to always be the one who understands.
For once, I want to be understood too.
I don’t want to always be the strong one.
For once, I want to fall apart beside someone without being afraid that they will see me as less because of it.
And maybe one day I’ll truly believe that I don’t have to be perfect to be loved.
Maybe one day I’ll believe that I’m still enough even when I have nothing to give to anyone.
Just myself.
And maybe that will be the first time I stop trying to be enough for everyone else.
And finally choose myself.
