Vintage Low Rise Flare Jeans by Label: 38 Pairs Measured

8 min readSep 24, 2026

Three pairs on the table this morning, three tags.

One reads 25L. One reads SIZE 5. One reads W 26, Made in USA.

Same rail, same low-rise flare, three different number systems.

Short version: a Y2K flare label uses one of three systems, and the waistband under it almost never measures what the number says. The rise is the figure that tells you where the jeans will sit, and on this rail it runs from 6 to 9½ inches.

I have measured 38 pairs of low and low-to-mid rise flares and bootcuts so far.

This is all of them, label by label.

Three number systems on one rail

The full table of the three label systems is in the original article on kitanesque.co.uk (link at the end).

The number on a 2000s pair of flares comes from one of three places.

A W number is inches, in theory. A W26 should be a 26-inch waist. Miss Me, Joe’s, Silver, Rock Revival, Miss Sixty and the Italian designer labels all tag this way.

An odd number, 1 to 13, is American juniors sizing. L.E.I., WallFlower, Taunt, ZCO, Zana Di and most of the embroidered-pocket labels from the mall years use it.

An even number, 0 to 14, is American misses sizing, the grown-up range. Cato, Earl Jeans, Axcess, Maurices, Royalty.

Then the odd ones out: an EU 36, an M, an S.

Waistband measured flat with the pair buttoned, then doubled. The UK size is the one each pair was listed as fitting after it went on me, a UK 8 at 5 foot 6, or was pinned and measured against sizes I know.

A W number lands on a UK 8, most of the time.

An even number lands on a UK 10.

An odd number lands anywhere from a UK 8 to a UK 16, because juniors runs from 1 to 13 and the whole range is on the rail.

Label by label

The full label-by-label table, with waist, rise and hem for all 38 pairs, is in the original article on kitanesque.co.uk (link at the end).

Lowest rise first.

Where a label has more than one pair, the figures sit in the same order across the row.

Hem measured flat across the leg opening, then doubled. Gone means the pair has found a new owner since it was measured. The figures stay, because they still tell you how that label cuts.

Both Miss Sixty pairs fitted a UK 8 with a 31 or 32 inch waistband under a tag that says 28. The Italian label does the same as the Americans.

Its 6-inch pair was a customised Collection flare, laced down both legs.

What the W number is worth

Eighteen pairs carry a W number. Two measured exactly what they said, and both are Italian: a Dolce & Gabbana 32 and a Trussardi 28.

One came in under, also Italian. The Roberto Cavalli tagged 29 measures 27 round.

The other fifteen were over. By two or three inches, usually.

By five on an Ariat W32. By six on a Joe’s marked W27 that measures 33 round and fits a UK 10.

Miss Me and Joe’s both started in Los Angeles in 2001, by their own accounts, and both cut the same way: tag 25 or 26, tape 28.

The number describes the body the jeans were drawn for. The waistband was cut for the place it lands on that body, a few inches lower down, where you are wider.

So with a W tag, read the number as your usual size and check the waistband figure in the listing.

A W25 or W26 on this rail fitted a UK 8 every time.

The full maths, from 132 pairs, is in the W28 guide.

Odd numbers are juniors

The Telepatía label spells it out: SIZE 3/26. Juniors 3, W26, same pair. It measures 28.

From there the odd numbers climb by roughly an inch and a half a step.

A 5 measured 27 and 29 on two pairs. A 7 measured 28. A 9 measured 34. An 11 measured 30 and 32.

A 13 measured 34, 35 and 36 on three pairs, which is a UK 14 to 16.

Juniors pairs are also the stretchiest on the rail. Nine of the ten have give in them.

Five of the eighteen W-tagged pairs do.

The L.E.I. 13 is the one to picture: a red tab with the number, a woven label that reads Ashley, lowrise, slim boot, and a 35-inch waistband on a 9-inch rise. It went on a UK 16.

One date to keep in mind. WallFlower says on its own site that it launched in 2008 as a juniors denim brand.

So a WallFlower pair is late 2000s at the earliest, whatever the tag looks like.

Y2K in silhouette only.

Even numbers are the grown-up range

Seven pairs carry an even misses number. A 4 measured 29. The three 6s measured 28, 29 and 31. An 8 measured 31, a 10 measured 33, a 12 measured 35.

Five of the seven fitted a UK 10, the 10 and the 12 a UK 14.

That is the usual American conversion, give or take an inch.

These are also the highest rises in the pile: 8½ to 9½ inches, none lower.

Ignore the word on the tag, read the inches

The Silver tag reads Aiko Mid Boot, W27/L33.

My tape reads 7½ inches from the top of the waistband to the crotch seam, one of the lower figures on this rail.

The L.E.I. tag reads lowrise. It measures 9.

So the rise word is the brand’s opinion within its own range.

The inch figure is the only one that travels between labels.

Across the 38 pairs: two sit at 6 inches, the Big Star and a customised Miss Sixty.

Five at 7. Nine at 7½.

Sixteen pairs at 7½ or under, twenty-five at 8½ or under, the rest between 9 and 9½.

Anything at 7½ or under sits a hand’s width below the belly button on me. At 9 the waistband reaches the hip bone.

A 10-inch pair from the same years, and there are a few on the rail, is mid rise and behaves like a different garment.

Silver’s own site is selling new low-rise fits again this season, under a heading that reads Go Lower.

The old ones are already cut.

Flare or bootcut: the hem decides

Bootcuts on the rail open to 12 to 16 inches round at the hem, a couple at 18 and 19. Flares open to 15 to 21, most of them at 18.

The Big Star opens to 20. The Galliano that went in September, customised with patchwork panels, opened to 28.

Inside legs run from 27 to 34 inches.

Two pairs have been taken up to my height, 5 foot 6: the Joe’s W26 and the off-white Miss Sixty, which now measures 27½ on the inside leg.

The Silver tag says L33. The tape says 30½. Somebody before me did the same.

When a label length and a listing length disagree, that is usually why.

How to check a pair at home

Three numbers, in this order.

The rise first. Under 8 and the waistband will sit on your hips, so measure yourself there, at hip-bone height, and hold that figure against the waistband measurement in the listing. Every pair on the site carries both, and the size guide shows how they were taken.

Then the hem, doubled, if the flare matters to you.

13 is a bootcut that sits over an ankle boot. 18 is a proper kick.

Then the inside leg against the shoes you will actually wear. The 34s want a heel.

Or skip the maths: put your usual size or your measurements into Will it fit? once, and every pair on the site tells you whether it does up, low-rise allowance included.

Stuck between two? Message me on WhatsApp from the product page and I’ll get the tape out again.

What went in September

The customised pairs go first.

A Diesel low-rise bootcut with lace-up cut-outs was listed on 15 September and gone the same day, at £125.

The Galliano patchwork flare and the laced Miss Sixty went on the same day, 9 September, at £135 and £105.

The plain ones take longer and cost less.

An Ariat W32 went two days after listing at £40. The Dolce & Gabbana 32 took ten days at £85.

The ONLY pair is the opposite case: still wearing its shop string tag, never worn, tagged EU M.

It is the smallest waistband on the rail at 26 inches, and it is £25.

Across the low-rise pairs on the rail, prices run from £17 to £145.

Most sit between £25 and £40.

The rest of the 2000s wardrobe those jeans belong with is in the Y2K guide, and the Miss Me and Miss Sixty pairs are measured in more detail on their own pages.

Questions people ask

Which brand has the best low-rise jeans?

Measured, the lowest rises on my rail are Big Star at 6 inches, then Joe’s, Miss Me and Rock Revival at 7. For a low rise that still fits like your usual size, the W-tagged American pairs are the safest bet: a W25 or W26 fitted a UK 8 every time, with 2 to 3 inches of room built in.

Is a juniors 13 a UK 16?

Usually a UK 14 to 16. The three 13s measured 34, 35 and 36 inches round the waistband, on a 9 to 9½ inch rise, and fitted a UK 14, a UK 16 and a UK 16. Check the waistband figure in the listing, because a 13 from one label can be two inches bigger than a 13 from another.

What is the difference between bootcut and flare jeans?

The hem. On the pairs measured here a bootcut opens to 12 to 16 inches round at the ankle, enough to sit over a boot, and a flare opens to 15 to 21, most at 18. Both widen from the knee. A flare keeps going.

Every pair still here is on the flare jeans rail, with the measurements on every listing, and the wider Y2K rail has the tops that go with them.
