PolarStar Direct Attachment (F2 DA and JACK DA): what it really solves, and what it costs you
Article for Medium / the blog. Quotes come from the official product page and from PolarStar’s guide; links at the end.
PolarStar’s Direct Attachment is the most honest answer anyone has given to the HPA alignment problem, and at the same time the most restrictive one. It is worth understanding both things before you buy it, because it solves your problem in a way you probably had not considered — and it closes doors you may not want closed.
Start with the problem. When you mount a pneumatic engine in a gearbox, the alignment between the nozzle and the hop-up chamber depends on the shell: on how its two halves fit together, on the clearances between the cylinder hole and its pins, and on how tight the stock tube screw is. PolarStar documents that displacement in its own shim set: the engine can move “forward or backward”, changing how far the nozzle protrudes, with the result of “inconsistent BB seating and air seal”. Their official solution is to slip shims in and eyeball it.
The Direct Attachment does something else: it takes the shell out of the equation.
How it works
It replaces the front cylinder of your F2 or your JACK with a two-piece assembly — a DA front cylinder and an internal adapter — so that the hop-up chamber threads directly into the adapter. The brand describes it as turning “engine, hop-up and inner barrel” into a single rigid, monolithic unit. If the three parts define their own geometry relative to each other, the position of the gearbox window stops mattering, which is why the guide concludes: “This eliminates the need for gearbox alignment shimming entirely”.
It is an elegant solution. And its cost is a sentence that PolarStar writes in functional capitals:
“compatible only with the PolarStar V2 Hop Up Thing… No other hop-up unit is compatible”
That is the trade. You buy guaranteed alignment in exchange for a single hop-up chamber. No MAXX Model, no Silent Industries ALPHA, no Begadi Neptuno Pro, no GATE EON, no Retro Arms, no VFC VegaForce. The V2 Hop Up Thing, and that is that.
In the May 2026 guide, on top of that, the Kythera is listed as “in progress, not currently supported”. And a distributor adds, for the JACK DA: “Not compatible with F2/Kythera engines or unmodified gearboxes” — meaning the JACK DA does not work on an F2 either, and it is not a drop-in on just any shell.
The details that give away how fine this system is
Two things about the DA system itself, which are not criticisms but useful information:
1. The deviation tolerance it accepts is ~0.0025 inches per side. That is about six hundredths of a millimetre. To give you a sense of the order of magnitude: the tolerance we work with in the catalogue, for an existing nozzle length to count as valid, is ±0.254 mm — and one extra millimetre on a nozzle is already a real problem.
2. The feed tube position is fixed with five 8×1.5 mm O-rings, and the guide warns that a spring cannot be used for it: “A spring cannot be used, as it will likely overpower the force of the pusher spring and lead to a misaligned feed tube”. The forward push comes from a 3D-printed shroud/pusher and a 10 lb/in compression spring.
And here is the detail I find the most interesting in the whole system: PolarStar solves part of its own product with 3D-printed parts and publishes the files so you can print them, including a printed tool to orient the chamber’s rotation as you thread it in (the guide accepts “a small amount of rotational misalignment”). When someone tells you a printed part is not “real”, point them to the product page of an official PolarStar component.
Which of the two routes is right for you
They are not competitors; they are two different decisions.
Direct Attachment
Alignment kit on your chamber
- What it fixes: Engine ↔ chamber ↔ barrel relationship through a threaded connection.
- Alignment: Guaranteed by design. No shims.
- Hop-up chamber: PolarStar V2 Hop Up Thing only.
- Engines: F2 and JACK (Kythera in progress).
- Gearbox: Requires modifications; not every shell is compatible.
- Printed parts: Yes, included by the manufacturer.
Universal / Structural
Alignment through clamp and base
- What it fixes: Engine ↔ chamber relationship through a clamp and base.
- Alignment: Guaranteed by the part itself, but depends on a rigid lower.
- Hop-up chamber: Your choice — MAXX, ALPHA, Neptuno Pro, EON, Retro Arms, ProWin, VFC, ICS…
- Engines: F1, F2, JACK, GATE Pulsar S/D/D2/H, Wolverine, Redline, Blackdraft, SparkLabs, Genesis.
- Gearbox: V2, ICS Split, long V2.5 (SR-25), compact platforms.
- Printed parts: Yes, throughout the structure.
If your goal is a “terminal” build around the PolarStar component and you do not mind staying married to their chamber, the DA is the right answer and I am not going to argue with it.

If your goal is to keep the hop-up chamber you chose — or you have not even thought about the chamber yet and what you want is to stop chasing a regulation problem — then what you need is to fix the assembly in place, not to switch platforms.
One thing you should not do: buy into DA thinking it is “the most precise” without looking at the chamber list. The day you want a Silent Industries ALPHA or a GATE EON because it suits your BB and your distance, the monolith does not let you.
About the second route I also have to be honest: I do not sell a kit for Direct Attachment. My catalogue works on top of commercial hop-up chambers, which is where people need a solution. If you are on DA with the Hop Up Thing, your problem is already solved by PolarStar and you do not need my parts.

- PolarStar F2 + GATE EON for M4 AEG (v2.1)
- PolarStar F2 + Begadi Neptune PRO for M4 AEG (v2.1)

The practical difference between the two solutions is not which alignment gives a better result — both are good, by different roads — but what you give up. The DA ties you to the V2 Hop Up Thing: if tomorrow you want to switch to a GATE EON, a Silent Industries ALPHA or a Begadi Neptune Pro, the assembly you bought becomes unusable. The alignment kit does not touch that decision: it keeps your current chamber and fixes its position relative to the engine, and the top cap changes with the chamber, not the rest of the gearbox.
And here too, so that nobody gets a surprise: what you buy is the downloadable design, not a printed part shipped to you. The kits sit in the EUR 20–25 range, they print in PLA+ at 0.10–0.15 mm with 65–80 % infill, and the listing carries the parameters, the hardware list and the assembly order. Consistent with what PolarStar does, which publishes its own print files in the Creator Corner and sells the DA hardware as a printable part.
If your build does not start from a metal ICS lower, the printable version of the universal lower respects the central slot of the split system that the kit base seats onto: V3, free · V4.2 · V4.3 · v4.4 MTW.
