This kind of interstitial journaling is a cognitive behavioral therapy technique, though it’s more for changing behavior than productivity per se, and it’s used with more structure around the questions to journal about. The point is exactly what you mention — to bring unconscious thoughts, feelings, and behaviors into the conscious mind, so you can then analyze and change them. The journal prompts help guide you through changing your thinking and with practice, that becomes behavior. It’s very effective for managing anxiety and fear especially, but it works for all kinds of unconscious behaviors. I customized one for myself, used it faithfully even though it was time consuming, and saw a lot of change!
