How AI is transforming our world

2 min read3 days ago

--

AI is changing almost everything in our lives, but not equally and not always as loudly as the headlines would have us believe. That’s the big picture.

● Work and the economy

AI is automating parts of jobs, not whole jobs, especially in writing, coding, analysis, customer support and design. Now many people use AI tools to help them with their jobs. They can boost productivity, but they also alter the value of skills. Entry-level positions that once served as training grounds are feeling particularly pressured and there is real uncertainty about how fast labor markets will adjust. At the same time, new roles are emerging around the building, management and integration of these systems.

● Science and medicine

This is where some of the most exciting change is taking place. AI is helping scientists predict the structure of proteins, discover drugs, read medical images, speed up materials research and sort through mountains of data. Doctors are using more AI to document visits and help make decisions, freeing up time to spend with patients.

● Educational Background

Students receive immediate, customized explanations and teachers may utilize AI for lesson planning and feedback. Conversely, discussions about cheating, over-reliance, and what skills schools should teach when answers are readily available continue.

● Media and information

AI makes it cheap to generate text, images, audio and video, which is great for creativity and accessibility but also feeds deepfakes, spam and misinformation. It is becoming increasingly difficult to trust what we see and read and tools that verify authenticity are more important than ever.

● Day-to-day life

Phones and apps have search, translation, navigation, recommendations and assistants, all of which are increasingly powered by AI. Language barriers are disappearing and things like writing emails, planning a trip or learning a new skill are easier than ever before.

Risks and uncertainties

Bias and fairness in systems that affect hiring, lending and policing

Privacy and data usage

Concentration of power in few companies and nations

“Energy and environmental costs of large-scale computing”.

Safety, reliability and how to keep powerful systems in line with human interests.

Regulation

very patch and still trying to catch up

The larger picture

There is broad consensus among experts that AI is a general purpose technology, somewhat akin to electricity or the internet, but there is sharp disagreement on how fast it will advance and how disruptive it will be. A lot depends on decisions about business practices, policy and how broadly the benefits are distributed.
