Joule Work Is Going GA. Intent Alone Won’t Run Your Enterprise.

I have watched enough AI demos to know the difference between a clever chat window and an operating model. At SAP TechEd 2026, that distinction got sharper.

SAP is rolling Joule Work into general availability in a phased approach. The pitch is clean: describe a goal, and AI orchestrates the agents, applications, and data — SAP and non-SAP — to get the work done. Philipp Herzig, CTO of SAP SE, put it plainly: Joule Work is where you put your intent and get work done, in one experience across the landscape. That is a real product moment, not another slide about the future.

What actually shipped

The TechEd Innovation News Guide is worth reading in full. Alongside phased GA for Joule Work and Joule Studio, SAP highlighted a new agentic thinking capability for complex workflows: reason, plan, and execute multi-step work with audit trails, role-based permissions, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints. Agent-to-agent interoperability through a secure gateway is also moving into phased GA, so third-party agents can call Joule Agents under access control rather than through ad hoc glue.

That governance language matters. Intent without checkpoints is just a faster way to make the same mistake across more systems.
