Life of a Writer: January 20, 2025
When Your Cat Runs the Show…
The winter sun creeps through my office window like a tentative muse, casting long shadows across my keyboard while Whiskey, my feline taskmaster, performs his daily ritual of walking across my keyboard at precisely the wrong moment. He’s got impeccable timing, that one — always managing to delete entire paragraphs with his graceful chaos.
But fuck it, that’s the writing life, isn’t it? A delicate dance between creative ambition and the cosmic comedy of trying to maintain productivity while a fur-covered dictator demands attention.
Today’s to-do list reads like a fever dream of digital content creation. I’m staring down the barrel of not one, but five Substack articles — because apparently, I hate sleep and have a masochistic relationship with self-imposed deadlines. I use this article writing time for warm-up for my novel writing projects. Then there’s the tutorial video I need to craft, teaching fellow creators how to break free from the aesthetic prison that is LinkTree. (Seriously, why are we still using that basic bitch of brand presentation?)
The real gem in today’s chaos? Screenshots. So. Many. Screenshots. Scrivener’s interface will be permanently burned into my retinas after capturing every nuanced detail for five separate tutorial modules. My subscribers at The Tormented Writers Society didn’t sign up for half-assed guidance, and I’ll be damned if that’s what they’ll get.
For those wondering how this circus of creativity actually unfolds, here’s the skeleton of chaos that structures my day (and yes, I have a new TV being delivered today supposedly):
6 AM: Dawn breaks like a hammer against my consciousness, and I drag myself to the keyboard before my brain can mount a proper resistance. These pre-dawn hours, when the world still dreams and Whiskey hasn’t yet begun his campaign of keyboard domination, are sacred ground for the first Substack piece.

8 AM — 11 AM: The screenshot marathon begins. Scrivener’s interface becomes my unwilling model as I capture every fucking nuance for the tutorial modules. Whiskey particularly enjoys this part — something about the cursor movements sends his into a state of feline ecstasy.
11 AM — 2 PM: Tutorial video time. Nothing says “professional content creator” quite like recording seventeen takes because your cat decided each one needed a special guest appearance. The irony of teaching others about brand presentation while a furry chaos agent methodically destroys mine isn’t lost on me.
2 PM — 5 PM: The Substack article factory kicks into high gear. Four pieces to go, and the coffee pot becomes my closest confidant. Whiskey, sensing my desperate focus, chooses this time to conduct his most thorough investigation of my laptop’s keyboard. 4 PM usually rolls around and Master Whiskey insists that dinner is an hour earlier than what he usually gets at 5 PM. He must wait.
5 PM — 7 PM: The outline beckons — a sprawling beast that demands to be tamed. My journey as a writer, it turns out, reads less like a hero’s quest and more like a cosmic joke with an endless series of punchlines.
7 PM onwards: When the digital dust settles, and the last word finds its home on the virtual page, Whiskey and I sit in the gathering darkness, contemplating the beautiful absurdity of this life we’ve chosen. Or maybe he’s just plotting tomorrow’s keyboard invasion. With cats, it’s hard to tell.
Between tasks, Whiskey offers his editorial input through a series of judgmental stares and strategic keyboard naps. He’s particularly critical of my outline-in-progress — a sprawling document meant to capture my “journey as a writer” on Medium. As if distilling years of creative evolution, crushing self-doubt, and occasional triumphs into a neat little narrative package isn’t challenging enough, try doing it with a cat who thinks your cursor is his personal entertainment system.
But here’s the truth, served straight up: This chaotic symphony of content creation isn’t just work — it’s the heartbeat of a digital storyteller’s existence. Every article, every tutorial, every perfectly captured screenshot is another thread in the tapestry of our online literary ecosystem.
And Whiskey? Well, he’s not just a cat — he’s a reminder that sometimes the best writing comes from the moments between the plans, when a purring companion forces you to pause, breathe, and remember why you fell in love with this beautifully messy creative life in the first place.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a cat to appease and a mountain of content to conquer. The digital page awaits, and time — much like my feline overseer’s patience — waits for no one.
