I Compared a $2,499 Mac Studio to a $200/Month AI Plan. The Math Surprised Me
Everyone says the box “pays for itself” in 12.5 months. The math tells a different story.
Picture this: you cancel your Claude Code or Codex subscription and buy a Mac Studio instead. It writes your code from your own desk, with no monthly bill and no weekly limit.
The napkin math looks great. The Mac Studio starts at $2,499 in the US before tax. That is the M5 Max with an 18-core CPU, a 32-core GPU, 36 GB of memory, and 512 GB of storage. The plans it would replace are Anthropic’s Claude Max 20X or OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro 200, both $200 a month and billed monthly only.
$2,499 ÷ $200 ≈ 12.5 months. After that, the machine has “paid for itself.”
People online are doing this exact arithmetic. One person noted that Apple’s financing, $208.25 a month for 12 months, is about what the subscription costs. Another said an M5 Ultra setup at $12,299 equals 65 months of Claude Max 20X. A third guessed the upcoming 512 GB version would top $15,000, which they called 12 years of OpenAI Pro.
The 12.5-month figure is real arithmetic, and I understand why it spreads. But it assumes the Studio does the same job as the plans, and that assumption is where it falls apart.
