The Last Moat Just Fell: AI Now Speaks Fluent Compiler
The “CRUD-only” excuse just expired
For two years I heard the same line in every engineering channel: AI is fine for CRUD endpoints and YAML. Nobody lets it near a kernel, a SIMD hot loop, or anything where cycles matter.
That was the moat. Systems people were safe.
On September 30, Google published its Gemini 4 Argon announcement. Buried under the benchmark charts are two examples that drain that moat. Not a todo app. A microkernel and a video decoder.
800,000 lines of microkernel
Google says Argon agents are migrating C and C++ to Rust across the company. The work scales from core libraries like re2 and libgav1 up to 800K+ lines of Fuchsia’s Zircon kernel.
Let me be precise, because the hype cycle won’t be. This is work in progress, not a shipped port. Google says these rewrites go through automated and manual auditing, emulation testing and review before production.
Still, sit with the scale. Zircon is not a web app. It is the scheduler, the memory manager, the IPC layer: the code every other line trusts.
Think about the last time your team migrated a single service between languages. It probably took a quarter, a migration doc…
