Top boarding schools set different entrance tests, but maths shows up in almost all of them. Here is what each school looks for and how to prepare.

What Doon School tests in maths

The Doon School exam has four one-hour papers: English, Mathematics, Science, and Reasoning with a Case Study. Hindi is no longer part of the test, according to the school’s latest admission notification. The maths questions have several steps, like finding a number that leaves the same remainder when divided by four different numbers, or working out the net effect of a percentage rise followed by a fall. Working through Doon School entrance exam sample papers under timed conditions is the quickest way to get used to this style.

How other schools compare

Mayo College assesses age-appropriate numeracy alongside Hindi and English. Rishi Valley pairs English and maths tests with an interview. Pathways World School may use written placement assessments in maths, English and science for older grades, within an IB framework.

What this means for preparation

Every one of these schools rewards clear thinking over memorised formulas. Students do best when they:

  • practise multi-step word problems regularly
  • review mistakes, not just scores
  • build speed only after the concepts are secure

How TrueMaths supports this

Doon School entrance exam coaching in Dehradun at TrueMaths uses small live groups, class worksheets, regular tests and progress reports for parents. It also includes mock interviews, since the interview carries real weight at schools like Doon.

Takeaway: start early, practise under timed conditions, and fix concepts rather than chasing answers.

A few notes on the links:

  • Dropped links: Rishi Valley, Dhirubhai Ambani, the Doon School profile and the alumni page are not linked. DAIS is not mentioned in the text either. If you want one of them back, I’d swap it in for the Mayo link rather than adding a sixth.
  • Link placement: the sample-papers link sits in the paragraph most closely tied to its topic. The coaching page is the commercial link, so it goes in the final section.
  • Existing links: this works best if your site already links to these pages elsewhere. A new post that links to five pages helps most when those pages also link back.
