The fluorescent hum of the office ceiling lights had long faded into background noise, but the problem on my screen was growing louder by the minute. A legacy codebase. One million lines of it. Scattered across hundreds of repositories, undocumented in critical sections, and understood by exactly two people who had both submitted their resignation letters.
We needed an AI assistant — but not just any assistant. We needed one that understood our proprietary business logic, our internal APIs, and the architectural decisions made five years ago by people who no longer worked here. And we needed it to keep our intellectual property safe.
This is the story of how we built exactly that: a private, RAG-enhanced co-pilot in VS Code, powered by a model hosted privately on Azure, designed to understand a million lines of our own code.
