The Bard and Me

I woke up this morning contemplating writing something by hand. I haven’t composed a piece that way in decades.

I was thinking that it would improve my Hand-Eye coordination. I have lost a great deal of my vision. I would need lined paper to keep the sentences straight, and a dark “Sharpie” pen with each word taking up two lines, in order for me to see it without a magnifying glass.

It would be a secret record for myself alone. There would be no copies, no instant sharing all over the world. Nobody to praise it — but no trolls to misinterpret or shit on it, either!

Actually, the lines on the paper would have to be very dark. If I jot down even a short note without using my magnifying glass, the words tend to run off at an upward angle — which I have no idea of until I take the magnifier to check what I have written. It’s very frustrating, and not a little upsetting.

The ink would probably bleed through to the next blank page, and I would have to throw that paper away — or better, use a blotter underneath the page I’m writing on. How many of you remember blotters?

It would force me to slow down and really think about each word. It would give me the same restrictions that Shakespeare had, and it would put me in even greater awe of his genius.
