Event Driven Architecture Vs Enterprise Service Bus

Jun 22, 2025

Event Driven Architecture and Enterprise Service Bus both are architectural patterns for designing distributed systems.

The fundamental difference between these two is how the communication between the services is handled implementing these patterns.

ESB

ESB is a centralized layer where all services connect, It performs message transformation, routing, protocol bridging , security and orchestration.

The services are dependent on ESB to receive the message.

i.e., An order service sends a message to ESB — — -> transforms XML to JSON — →ESB routes it to billing and inventory.

Event -Driven Architecture

It is a message broker based architecture where services communicate by publishing or subscribing to events.

The services are independent to consume the events as and when required.

i.e., Order placed event is published — → other services like billing, inventory and shipping react independently to this event.
