The Fascinating History of Virtual Reality (VR) — From Sci-Fi Dreams to My Meta Quest 3
Virtual Reality (VR) has always fascinated me, but it wasn’t until I recently purchased the Meta Quest 3 that I truly realized its immersive potential. From exploring virtual worlds to interacting with objects and people in real-time, the experience felt like stepping into the future. After that, I became curious: How did we get here? How did VR evolve from a concept in science fiction to the hyper-realistic, consumer-friendly experience we know today?
In this blog, I’ll take you on a journey through the history of VR, highlighting its milestones, key inventions, and the visionaries who made it all possible.
The Early Dreams of Virtual Reality
The idea of virtual reality predates the technology by many years, with its roots firmly planted in literature, art, and film. From “Pygmalion’s Spectacles” (1935), a short story that described a world where a pair of goggles could transport the user to an immersive and sensory-rich world, to early sci-fi books like “Neuromancer” and movies like “The Matrix”, the dream of stepping into alternate realities has captured imaginations for decades.
But long before these fictional tales became reality, the seeds of VR were sown in more analog ways.
