Vercel vs Netlify — Serverless Hosting Platforms
Whenever the topic of deploying a frontend project comes up, the two very popular deployment platforms immediately come to our mind are, Vercel and Netlify. These platforms offer free deploying and managing of web application. Provides serverless functions and focuses on static hosting and edge/serverless capabilities.
Vercel:
It is a cloud platform developed by the Next.js team, specifically designed for deploying frontend projects. By simply connecting a GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket repository, Vercel automatically builds and deploys the project with every push. This makes deployment straightforward, as any changes are instantly reflected after each git push. Vercel will be having third-party access to our account.
Advantages of using Vercel:
· Provides zero-config deployments: This means it removes all the extra steps or friction from deployment process which were there in traditional hosting platforms, where manual configuration of servers, setting up of build pipelines, or managing environment variables was needed. Vercel automatically does all the work for us by detecting project type (Next.js, React, etc.) and applied necessary build settings, handles dependency installations, production builds, optimizations out of the box. It is basically very helpful for solo developers, tight deadline projects, or new developers without deep knowledge of deployment internals. It supports latest frameworks, technologies and ensures the compatibility.
· Preview deployments for each pull request: Enhances team collaboration by giving each pull request or branch its own live URL, allowing developers, testers, stakeholders to analyze exact changes in a real environment before merging into main branch, which eliminates need for separate staging environment and optimizes code review. Teams can provide feedback on UI, functionality, or performance, reducing the risk of bugs reaching production. It integrates smoothly with git workflows, hence improving the efficiency of continuous integration and continous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
· Edge functions for faster performance: These allow running of server-side code closer to user’s location instead of a centralized server, reducing latency and improving performance, especially for dynamic applications. Enhances serverless architecture by allowing execution of backend logic without maintaining traditional servers. Ensures faster Rendering and APIs response in real-time, improves user experience as well as SEO performance.
Well-suited for React/Next.js projects, SaaS apps, personal portfolios, and modern web apps.
Steps to connect GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket repo to Vercel:
- Sign in to Vercel.
- Import project by clicking “New Project” button.
- Choose Git provider (Select GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket).
- Authorize Vercel by giving access to the account/repo.
- Select Repository to deploy.
- Configure settings [Set framework, root directory, build command, output directory(optional)].
- Deploy.
Netlify:
Also a cloud hosting and automation platform, widely used for Jamstack and static sites with smooth Git integration.
Advantages of Using Netlify:
· Serverless functions: Enables addition of backend functionality to static sites. These on-demand functions handle tasks like API calls, form submissions, sending of emails, etc. without needing a full-time server.

· Form handling (without extra code): Simplifies form management by automatic handling of submissions from our sites forms. No need to set up backend or additional scripts. It can capture, store form data, and also notify via email. Useful for portfolio websites, small business websites.
· Split testing (A/B testing): Allows A/B testing directly within our site, making it simple to experiment with different layouts, content, etc. Splitting of traffic between multiple versions, we can analyze of user behavior and optimize engagement without needing any third-party tools.
· Plugins ecosystem for CI/CD workflows: Allows to extend build and deployment processes. Can integrate automated testing, performance monitoring, image optimization, deployment notifications with few clicks. Smoothens workflow, especially for management of multiple projects with frequent updates.
Well-suited for Static websites, Jamstack apps, blogs, marketing sites, and multi-framework support.
Steps to connect GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket repo to Netlify:
- Sign in to Netlify.
- Click on “New site from Git” button on dashboard.
- Choose Git provider (Select GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket).
- Authorize Netlify by giving access to the account/repo.
- Select Repository to deploy.
- Configure Build settings: Set build commands (npm run build) and publish directory (dist or build).
- Deploy site.
Block Diagram of Deployment in Vercel / Netlify:
Explanation:
- Push code from local machine to GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket repo.
- It detects the push via webhooks and stars the build process.
- Build server installs dependencies and builds project.
- It deploys our project to preview (for testing) or production.
- The project is served through Edge Network (CDN), ensuring fast access for users everywhere.
