As I sit back in comfort, I can’t help but recall how agile we were in our youth. My body may now feel lethargic, and my movements are slower, but the memories of my student hostel days remain vivid and alive.

Living in a hostel with fellow students created a shared energy that bound us like brothers. Decisions were often spontaneous, and the chorus of “Yes, let’s go!” would echo across the dorms. One such adventure often took us to Matheran, a picturesque hill station near our campus.

Our plans were loose at best. We didn’t concern ourselves with where we’d sleep, what we’d eat, or how much money we’d carry. The thrill of uncertainty fueled our resolve, and we were confident in our ability to navigate the unknown and return safely by Sunday night, just in time for Monday morning classes.

The Journey to Matheran
Our escapades typically began on Friday night, boarding the last local train at 11 PM. The train ride to Neral, the base station for Matheran, took about four hours. Arriving at 2:30 AM, we would eagerly wait for the milk train from Pune, which carried a fresh supply to Mumbai. A hearty drink of milk was all we needed to begin the challenging 7-kilometer climb up the red-mud paths to Matheran, 2,700 feet above sea level.

Climbing in the monsoon was particularly exhilarating. Rainwater would cascade down the paths, soaking us as we trekked through the night. On one no-moon night, someone decided to share ghost stories during the climb, making the experience thrilling and spine-chilling.

Life at the Top
Matheran welcomed us with its serene beauty. Accommodation was simple and free — often the porch of the Ram Mandir near the main market served as our shelter. A towel laid out was enough to provide comfort for a peaceful sleep.

The mornings were reserved for exploring the wilder, untamed areas of Matheran, such as One Tree Hill. This involved navigating through dense grass along narrow paths, with a sheer drop of 2,500 feet on one side. Despite the risks, the experience was exhilarating and heart-pounding.

The Return
After a weekend of adventure, returning to campus on Sunday night felt deeply satisfying. A wholesome Punjabi meal awaited us, and the comfort of our hostel beds made the journey worthwhile.

Sometimes we explored other hill stations like Lonavala or Mahabaleshwar, but the essence of these youthful escapades remained the same — an urge to embrace the unknown and revel in the simplicity of life.

Reflections
These adventures taught me the value of friendship, the joy of stepping out of one’s comfort zone, and the beauty of connecting with nature. They were catalysts for growth, self-discovery, and a deeper appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.

Summary
This nostalgic essay recounts the author’s youthful adventures with hostel mates, particularly their weekend trips to Matheran, a nearby hill station. With minimal planning and a spirit of adventure, these escapades involved night treks, sleeping in makeshift shelters, and exploring untamed landscapes. Despite challenges like climbing in heavy rain or navigating narrow paths near cliffs, the experiences were thrilling and deeply fulfilling. These journeys not only strengthened friendships but also fostered personal growth and a love for nature, leaving lasting memories of the simplicity and excitement of youth.
