Transylvania after dark, and two more Romanian nights

Halloween is close, and Transylvania is the name everyone reaches for. Romanian villages have their own night of spirits, though, and it isn’t October 31. The old tales put it on St. Andrew’s Eve, the night of November 29. The strigoi are said to walk, garlic goes on the windows and doors, and wolves, so the stories go, can speak. Other tales say the vârcolaci climb into the sky and eat the moon, which is how the old stories explained an eclipse.

Seasons Live Wallpaper has no Halloween mode. What it does have is Legends of Romania: four real places in Romania, in an oil-painting style, through every season, by day and by night. Two of them are in Transylvania and two are elsewhere in Romania. After dark, a few of those old tales come to visit.

Transylvania after dark

The castle on the pass: bats round the tower

After dark the castle’s windows glow with candlelight, and bats loop round the tower. Tap the tower and more of them pour out. Around dawn and sunset, Moș Martin, the brown bear, may wander along the forest’s edge.

Through the year: the bats and the bear keep to spring, summer and autumn. In winter the castle sleeps as nature does, and only the candles stay up. And on St. Andrew’s night, November 29 and 30, the castle gets a visitor it never has otherwise: a grey wolf may come to keep watch on the lawn.

The mountain lake: where the Iele dance

Higher up, at the top of a mountain road of hairpins, the lake catches the moon. At night its light lies on the water as a column of glitter.

In Romanian folklore the Iele are fairy women who dance a hora by moonlight, in lonely glades and by still water. In Seasons they’re a dancing ring of light by the lake, and they come on summer nights.

Through the year: from spring to autumn the lake moves under the moon, and car lights still climb the hairpins after dark. Summer nights add fireflies over the meadow, and on Sânziene, June 24, the Iele dance all night. In winter the lake freezes, the road is snowed shut, and an ice hotel on the far shore stays lit from inside all night.

Two more Romanian nights

The royal castle: the wolf’s vigil

The royal castle isn’t in Transylvania; it stands on the other side of the mountains. At night a grey wolf may keep vigil on its lawn. Tap it and it howls. On St. Andrew’s night, the stories say, it might even talk.

Through the year: the wolf comes in every season. When it sits and howls, a ring of light rises from its muzzle: starlight for most of the year, and snow sparkle in winter. The castle’s windows stay lit all night.

The painted monastery: the magic horse

Further north, the painted monastery has the gentlest nights of the four. At night Calul Năzdrăvan, the winged marvel horse of Romanian fairy tales, may come down to graze on the meadow. By day it’s Pasărea Măiastră, the many-coloured bird, who may visit.

Through the year: the magic horse can come in any season. In spring and summer a stork keeps to its nest by the church through the night, and moths gather at the lit windows. Late spring brings fireflies to the orchard. Autumn and winter nights are quieter, with only the candles in the windows.

The sky is the real one

The moon over all four places is the real moon for where you live, in its real phase, under a sky full of stars. Tap the night sky and make a wish.

And when a real eclipse comes, it plays out on the wallpaper too. For one evening, the vârcolaci of the old tales get their moment.

A note on the places
