Wait, Are We Actually Wrong About AI Stealing Our Jobs?

Encounter between Humanity and AI

While everyone else has been losing sleep over this whole AI thing, I’ve always been cautiously optimistic. Sure, every week there’s another headline about chatbots replacing writers, algorithms taking over finance, or robots doing… well, everything. But I keep seeing stories of augmentation rather than replacement.

So when I stumbled across PwC’s massive study while browsing AI news and tech updates online, I knew I had to dig deeper. After reading through their analysis of close to a billion job ads from 6 continents and writing about it on my site Accuralist, I realized this data completely validates what I’ve been suspecting all along.

Here’s what keeps me curious: What if we’re asking the wrong questions?

What if instead of asking “How will AI destroy jobs?” we should be asking “Why are we so convinced it will?”

And honestly? The results validated what I’ve been thinking.

Yes, AI is changing how we work

First off, let me get this out of the way: yes, AI is changing how we work. But the apocalyptic “robots are coming for your job” narrative? The data doesn’t really support it.

Here’s the thing that caught me off guard. Even in jobs that are super exposed to AI — like financial analysts, customer service reps, software developers — job postings are still increasing.

I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop in this report, but it never did. Instead, I found something way more interesting.

The productivity thing is actually insane

Think about this for a second. Workers in AI-heavy industries are becoming 4 times more productive. Four times! That’s not just “getting things done faster” — that’s completely changing what’s possible.

But here’s the question nobody’s asking: What happens when humans become 4x more valuable instead of obsolete?

And here’s where it gets weird: companies with AI-savvy employees are seeing 3x higher revenue per person. So instead of cutting jobs, smart companies are realizing these AI-powered humans are actually worth way more.

The money part (because let’s be real, that’s what we care about)

Remember how everyone said AI would drive down wages? Well, people with AI skills are enjoying a 56% wage premium. I’m talking real money here — not some hypothetical future benefit.

Even crazier: between 2019 and 2024, the percentage of AI-related jobs requiring a degree dropped from 66% to 59%. The job market is caring less about your diploma and more about what you can actually do with these tools.

What’s really happening (and why everyone got it wrong)

I think we’ve all been asking the wrong question. Instead of “Will AI take my job?” maybe we should be asking “How can I use AI to become way better at my job?”

Because here’s what I believe: The people who will thrive in this new world aren’t the ones with the best degrees or the most experience. They’re the ones who understand that technology doesn’t replace human potential — it amplifies it.

The data shows this is exactly what’s happening. AI isn’t replacing people — it’s making people supercharged versions of themselves.

Why this feels different from past tech disruptions

Every generation thinks their technological revolution is the big one. But there’s something unique happening here. Previous automation mostly replaced physical labor. AI is different — it’s augmenting knowledge work in ways we’ve never seen.

But here’s what gives me hope: The industrial revolution eventually created more jobs than it destroyed, but it took decades. What’s wild about AI is how quickly it’s creating value for the people who learn to use it effectively.

The question isn’t whether change is coming. Change is already here. The question is: Will you be ready for it?

The uncomfortable truth

Look, I’ll admit my bias here: I went into this research hoping to find evidence that my optimistic take on AI was right. And I found exactly that — data suggesting that AI might be creating the biggest opportunity for knowledge workers in decades.

But here’s the thing most people won’t tell you: Opportunity and threat aren’t opposites. They’re two sides of the same coin. The same force that creates massive opportunity for some creates massive risk for others.

Companies are paying premium wages for people who can effectively use AI tools. Productivity is skyrocketing. New types of jobs are emerging faster than old ones are disappearing.

The difference? Some people are choosing to see the opportunity. Others are choosing to see only the threat.

What’s your experience been with AI at work? Are you seeing opportunities or threats? I’m curious to hear what’s happening in different industries.
