Skincare for Men with Melanin: What No One Taught Us
For many of us, growing up didn’t come with lessons on skincare — especially not if you were a young Black boy. Growing up, my parents told us to wash our faces, apply some lotion (if needed), and keep moving. Although grooming is a form of self-care, it was considered optional. Skincare, on the other hand, was primarily viewed as a woman’s concern.
But here’s the truth: melanin-rich skin has its own unique needs — and when ignored, it can lead to issues like hyperpigmentation, razor bumps, dryness, or uneven skin tone. As a licensed master barber and men’s grooming educator in NYC, I’ve seen firsthand how many of my clients — hardworking, stylish men — don’t have a skincare routine.
Why Melanin-Rich Skin Needs Special Attention
Melanin gives our skin its rich tone, but it also means we’re more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (those dark spots that linger after a pimple or cut). Our skin can be thicker or more sensitive to specific products, and it may react harshly to dryness or sun exposure.

That’s why skincare isn’t optional — it’s essential. Keeping the skin clean, exfoliated, and moisturized protects your appearance and your confidence.
Common Myths I Hear in the Barbershop
- “I just use water and lotion — I’m good.”
- “Sunscreen? No, I’m Black. I don’t burn.”
- “Skincare’s too complicated. I don’t have time.”
These myths do more harm than good. You don’t need a 10-step routine — just a few essentials that work for your skin.
A Basic Skincare Routine for Melanin-Rich Men
- Cleanser — Use a gentle, sulfate-free face wash to remove dirt and oil
- Exfoliant (2–3x/week) — Helps prevent ingrown hairs and fade dark spots
- Moisturizer — Keeps your skin hydrated and smooth
- Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) — Yes, even with melanin — it prevents damage and discoloration
One of the products I’ve been exploring is from Dr. Tracey Kearse’s Acarre, a multi-use dry oil that hydrates the skin, beard, and scalp
without clogging pores. The multi-use dry oil is a unisex, multi-use product that delivers results without clutter.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to know it all — start. Grooming is self-respect. Taking care of your skin is essential for maintaining your overall health.
The next time you book a cut, think about how your face looks under that fresh fade. Your barber may sharpen you up — but it’s your skin that shows the world how well you care for yourself.
