Fortigate — Troubleshooting WeChat connection

Background
This article was written on 08-Jul-2026.
Even though WeChat is already working on Android devices, we still cannot make and receive calls on iPHONE (I do not know what version).

Precautions
I suggest to note down what you change.
I also suggest to keep turning on your DNS Filter, App Filter and most importantly Anti Virus.
I prefer to create clone of the security profiles, keeping the default un-changed.

Prerequisites
I am using Fortigate model 60F with firmware 7.6.7 build 3704 (mature).
To review WeChat calls, we need at least two mobile devices, preferable at least one of them is iPhone.
Of course you need WeChat up and running, something which can be quite a challenge.

DNS Filter
First I notice that network traffic got blocked on “Freeware and Software Download”.
So I put “monitor” on the DNS Filter.

DNS Filter

App Filter
Then I start to see network traffic got blocked on “unknown” apps.
So I put “monitor” on “Unknown Applications”.

App Filter

Anti Virus
Even after monitoring those filters, I can not make WeChat calls work on iPhone.
Then I disabled Anti Virus and it worked!
But I do not want to disable Anti Virus, so I start to change settings.
What worked for me is:
- HTTP disabled

Alrighty, enjoy your WeChat services on your wireless network!
