Pipeline Repair and Reinforcement for Small Ducts

2 min readAug 1, 2017

Air ducts tend to corrode or leak from exposure to air and moisture. It is easy to perform repair and reinforcement on corroded or leaking air ducts using composite repair solutions.

Materials required for pipeline repair include:

  1. Suitable set of Epoxy Resin & Activator
  2. Uncoated Fiberglass Tape
  3. Sandpaper, paint brush and simple hand tools

Remove the dirt, old paint coatings, rust, and other contaminates by sand paper. Clean and degrease the duct surface thoroughly using cleaner & degreaser. After cleaning, roughen the duct surface to produce a good profile.Once the corroded duct surface has been cleaned and prepared, put on the latex gloves and pour the entire bottle of epoxy hardener into epoxy resin tin can in accordance to the correct mixing ratio. Mix and stir the activated resin mixture evenly for at least five minutes. Using a paint brush, apply the activated resin liberally promptly and evenly over the prepared area. The coating of activated resin should be approximately 1.0mm thick covering the prepared area. Allow the epoxy resin coating to cure for approximately 2 hours. This cured and hardened epoxy stick coating will provide a good

Cut a suitable length of uncoated fibreglass tape (e.g. 3 metres length) and lay out flat on a work bench station. Use a paint brush to apply the activated resin evenly over the entire length of fibreglass tape. Flip the fibreglass tape over and coat both side with the activated resin, ensuring that the fibreglass tape is completely whetted out. Next, wrap the coated fibreglass repair tape around the air duct, pulling slightly after each round of wrapping. Wrap the entire length of fibreglass takeover the duct with at least 50% overlap. Repeat the wrapping for at least 2 layers of fibreglass repair tape.
