Why Chandler Bing Was the Best Consultant Ever

And no, I still don’t know what he did either.

For ten seasons, Chandler Bing was a sarcastic, sweater-vest-wearing enigma whose job nobody could quite remember. Not Monica. Not Joey. Not even Chandler. And yet, man paid rent in Manhattan, wore suits to work, and kept saying things like “numbers” and “report.” That’s consultant behaviour if I’ve ever seen it.

Honestly, the more I learn about consulting, the more I realise… Chandler wasn’t just a consultant — he was the blueprint.

1. He built a career on sounding like he knows what he’s doing

If you’ve ever been in a college consulting society, you know that half the job is just sounding confident in your made-up market size. Chandler had that energy.

“Statistical analysis and data reconfiguration.”
Bro, you just said words. But somehow HR bought it, and so did we.

He could’ve walked into a Bain interview and said, “I optimise cross-functional deliverables for enterprise-level synergies,” and the partner would’ve nodded thoughtfully like, “You’re hired.”

2. Sarcasm was his communication strategy

Slide decks? Meh. Chandler could dismantle your argument with one raised eyebrow and a borderline mean joke.

Which, let’s be honest, is how half the consulting world works anyway. You act nice on the surface but deep down you’re calculating how many buzzwords you can use without actually committing to a decision.

Chandler just skipped the formalities and said: “Could this BE any more inefficient?”

3. He was everyone’s emotional support system — unpaid, of course

Consultants don’t just manage clients. They manage people’s feelings about clients. Chandler carried that emotional burden like a true pro.

  • Rachel’s heartbreak? Chandler.
  • Joey’s career confusion? Chandler.
  • Ross’s… everything? Still Chandler.

Somewhere between version 12 of the deck and your 3am breakdown, you become the unofficial therapist of the team. Chandler was already there.

4. He left. With flair.

Let’s talk about the exit strategy.

Chandler quitting his mysterious job to get into advertising was iconic. That’s not just a career switch. That’s a well-timed pivot.

Consultants dream about this. They romanticize “exit ops” more than they romanticize vacations. Chandler didn’t wait for LinkedIn to romanticise his pivot — he just did it. Found a new lane, reinvented himself, and wrote copy that would actually make people laugh. Honestly, if he had a Substack, I’d subscribe.

5. He brought the vibes

Sure, he didn’t save the world. But have you ever been stuck on a Sunday-night call about a client’s CRM system rollout while three people debate fonts? That’s when you need a Chandler.

  • He won’t solve the problem.
  • He probably doesn’t even know what the problem is.
  • But somehow, you feel better.

And that’s the kind of morale consulting teams survive on.

Honourable mention: His decks would’ve had elite names

  • The One Where We Cut Costs
  • The One With Too Many Stakeholders
  • The One Where Nothing Got Approved

Honestly? Iconic. MBB girlies, take notes.

Final Thoughts

We all have a little Chandler in us.

Confused, undercaffeinated, overthinking, and cracking jokes to survive — yet somehow still managing to deliver, hold the team together, and align the bullet points just right.

He may not have had a clear job description,
but what he did have was timing, sarcasm, and a deeply unnecessary tie collection.
And in consulting, frankly? That’s more than enough.

“I’m not great at the advice… can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?”

No Chandler, but you were great at the advice — you just hid it under three layers of dry humour and mild existential dread.

And maybe… that’s the most consultant thing of all.

That’s all from me — just a girl overthinking a sitcom character’s LinkedIn potential.
May your decks always align and your jokes always land.
