We Optimized 12 Endpoints. One Database Query Was Still Slowing Down Everything
We improved API response times, cleaned up service logic, and optimized multiple endpoints. But one expensive database query was still making the entire application feel slow.
There is something frustrating about optimizing an application and still watching the response time remain high.
We had already optimized 12 API endpoints. Removed unnecessary processing, reduced repeated service calls, and cleaned up inefficient code. Everything looked better from the application side.
But users were still experiencing slow responses.
The problem wasn’t another controller, another service method, or another HTTP configuration. It was one database query doing far more work than we expected.
This is something every backend developer should understand: your application can have clean code and still generate terrible SQL.
Let’s explore four database problems that quietly destroy API performance, how to identify them, and how to fix them using Java, Spring Boot, Hibernate, and SQL.
