Topic: Stand Still
Text: 2 Chronicles 20:1–30
We are continuing our series today on desiring God, and we will round up our discourse from yesterday on having a God in times of trouble.
Yesterday, we saw how Israel was living in times when the name of the Lord was not honoured in His house, and His priests profaned His sacrifices, and how the Lord brought judgment upon them by allowing them to fall before the Philistines, even after carrying the Ark of God into battle.
This is because the Lord is not a means to win a war, but a Lord who demands devotion and comes through for His own in the day of trouble.
And we see this manifested in the same Israel during the days of Samuel. After he had instructed them to turn to the Lord with all their hearts and put away other gods, they repented, and the Lord caused them to triumph over the same Philistine army (1 Samuel 7:3–13).

A good example is seen in our Bible text with King Jehoshaphat, who came to the throne at a time when only a few kings served the Lord truly, while many before and after him went after other gods.
But Jehoshaphat brought reforms to Judah, sent the priests and Levites to teach the Law, and restored the worship of the Lord (2 Chronicles 17:7–9; 19:4–11). And we see that on the day he was faced by an enemy with an army large enough to easily overwhelm his people, they turned to the Lord whom they served.
And one of the instructions they received was to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. And it happened that they began to praise the Lord, and their enemies turned against each other, and they didn’t need to lift a single weapon, as their enemies helped destroy one another (2 Chronicles 20:15–24).
Beloved, nowadays, many people have made this a formula for warfare and victory: that anytime we are confronted with a difficult situation like Jehoshaphat and Judah were, or we are faced with walls like those of Jericho, praise is the answer.
Yes, indeed, praising God is an answer for His children, and He rises for His own. The people who saw results in praise were living a life of praise, worship, and devotion to God, and did the same when confronted with battles. The Lord, who had promised to be with them, rose on their behalf (2 Chronicles 20:17).
Those who desire God and long for His fellowship see His hand when they are in trouble, while those who only run to Him when they are in trouble sometimes end up disappointed.
God bless you.
