Kālī and Kṛṣṇa: The One Who Is the Universe

2 min readSep 2, 2026

--

Episode 6 of the Kālī–Kṛṣṇa Sahasranāma Series

In the previous episode, we explored Kāla, Time, and Kṛṣṇa as Kālarūpa, the Form of Time.

Now we move from Time to the Universe itself.

One of the most powerful names in the Adya Kālī Sahasranāma is:

Kālī Sahasranāma

№161 — JAGANMĀTĀ
जगन्माता

Jaganmātā means “Mother of the Universe.”

The name presents Maa Kālī not simply as a deity within creation, but as the Mother of the entire universe.

This is a profound Śākta idea. The universe is not separate from the Divine Mother. She is approached as the source and mother of the manifested world.

Kṛṣṇa Sahasranāma

In our fixed Śrī Kṛṣṇa Sahasranāmāvaliḥ, we find:

№9 — JAGANMAYA
जगन्मयाय नमः — Jaganmayāya

Jaganmaya is formed from jagat, the universe, and maya, conveying the sense of being constituted by or pervading the universe. The name appears very near the beginning of Kṛṣṇa’s Sahasranāma.

Mother of the Universe Related to the entirety of the Universe

The names are not identical, and their meanings should not be artificially equated.

But they place both divine traditions in relation to the same fundamental reality:

Jagat, the universe.

Kālī is Jaganmātā, the Mother of the Universe.

Kṛṣṇa is Jaganmaya, whose being is intimately connected with the universe.

Does this prove that Kālī and Kṛṣṇa are identical?

Maybe…

it gives us another important textual bridge.

If the Goddess is approached as the Mother of the Universe, while Kṛṣṇa is described as Jaganmaya, then both traditions use cosmic language to describe the relationship between the Divine and existence itself.

This raises the next question:

Could the Divine Mother and the Supreme Consciousness be understood not as two independent Absolutes, but as two expressions of one Supreme Reality?

We continue following the names.
