The Bournville didn’t last long! (Author’s Collection)

According to reports, Saturday 10th October 2026 was “the best day ever”, and who am I to argue? Driving back from the forest as “The Black Keys” serenaded this not so “Lonely Boy” through to “Little Black Submarines” (“Operator, please. Put me back on the line…”) I couldn’t wait to get back as however quirkily wonderful it was to cook breakfast in a forest for my four mad companions at 7am, I had a feeling today might be a tad special, and so it was. No need for Ironbridge today or a stroll in the intermittent October sunshine or a walk along a Welsh beach (though many of those are planned for summer 2027). Just two crazy in love weirdos, tea, music, tall tales, a game of Scrabble, and a collective mind as dirty as a chimney sweep’s face. I’ll save you from those details lest you turn a dark shade of green in envy whilst questioning the wisdom of the antics of two people with a combined age of 101. Instead, I’ll confess to yet another defeat at Scrabble (this time by a whopping 68 points after “The Redhead” played not one, but two bloody 7 letter words!) and I’m still licking my wounds at a lifetime score now of 13–4 and there are surely more losses to come. But who really cares? Not me. For my beautiful lady indulged me and my love for all things Christopher Nolan and “The Prestige” (his unloved magical masterpiece) and we did what we do best on “the best day ever”.

“Dear Diary” is a new concept I’m running with for the new year. Short, punchy, irreverent, spoiler free, telling you everything and nothing about that day’s particular journal entry. Here’s today’s entry. Do check back in tomorrow. After you’ve tempted yourself with one of these beauties I self-published either side of Christmas 2025:
