For years, the British media portrayed Meghan as a heartless daughter who abandoned her father. Thomas Markle was repeatedly given a platform to air his complaints, while journalists and commentators used his appearances to malign, discredit and publicly humiliate his daughter. Truth is, Thomas was not merely a father caught in a painful family estrangement. He was a willing participant in the public turmoil surrounding Meghan, and some of the very people who helped keep that turmoil alive are now part of the questions this new revelation raises.

The latest revelations about the Metropolitan Police’s handling of information concerning allegations involving Thomas have brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding their estrangement. The Met has acknowledged that it received a letter in January 2019 but did not share the information with other relevant law-enforcement agencies. That raises serious questions about why the information was not passed on, what might have happened if it had been, and whether anyone outside the police knew more than the public was ever told.

But one distinction matters: Meghan did not need that letter to justify distancing herself from her father. One could say that by the time it reached her, the damage to their relationship had already been done. From Thomas causing public humiliation, betrayal surrounding her wedding and the leaking of a private letter to the media. But nothing gave Meghan more reason to protect her peace and draw a boundary around her growing family than the relentless attacks from her own father and the media during her pregnancy.

The letter was the final straw in a relationship that had already been deeply damaged, while its contents raised further questions that the relevant authorities must now address.

And that is what makes these revelations so significant. The question is no longer simply why Meghan distanced herself from Thomas Markle. It is why a father who repeatedly helped fuel the public attack on his daughter was so readily embraced by media figures who used him to keep that attack going — and what the public might have understood differently if the relevant authorities had acted on the information they received in 2019.

Her Own Father Helped Fuel the Harassment During Her Pregnancy

One of the most disturbing aspects of this story is the timing. Meghan was pregnant with her first child, enduring one of the most relentless periods of public harassment she experienced, and her own father was actively helping fuel the turmoil.

This was not simply a case of a father privately struggling with an estranged daughter. Thomas Markle repeatedly appeared in the media, giving journalists fresh material to portray Meghan as cold, ungrateful and cruel. He became a recurring character in the British press’s campaign to undermine his daughter.

But Thomas did not create this media relationship alone. There were powerful and persistent media figures ready to exploit it.

Piers Morgan, Dan Wootton, Caroline Graam, Lady C all platformed Thomas Markle in his relentless attacks on his daughter

Piers Morgan repeatedly gave Thomas a platform, including on Good Morning Britain. Dan Wootton made Thomas a fixture in his coverage, and reports that Wootton was prepared to fly him to Britain for a special interview illustrate just how much value the media placed on access to Meghan’s father. Lady Colin Campbell (Lady C) also weighed in on the family drama, while Daily Mail journalist Caroline Graham developed an unusually close relationship with Thomas, spending time with him in Mexico and later travelling to the Philippines.

This was more than journalists occasionally seeking comment from a man caught up in a family dispute. Thomas became a continuing source of content for people who knew that anything he said about Meghan could generate headlines, provoke another wave of criticism and keep the estrangement alive in the public imagination.

Money and greed were also part of the wider picture, which makes it harder for the media to present Thomas as the sympathetic image of a father who simply wanted to tell his side of the story. They point to a media relationship in which access to Thomas — and the stories he could provide — had value.

And Meghan was the person who paid the public price.

Imagine being pregnant with your first child while your father repeatedly gives interviews that invite millions of people to judge you negatively. Imagine watching influential commentators turn your family estrangement into a recurring public spectacle, while every new appearance gives them another reason to question your character. Thomas was not merely being spoken about by the press. He was participating in the coverage, providing material that helped keep his daughter under relentless scrutiny.

In her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan revealed that during her pregnancy with Archie she had experienced suicidal thoughts and reached a point where she no longer wanted to be alive. She described a period of profound distress in which she sought help.

He knew she was pregnant. He knew the media storm that surrounded her. The heartbreaking truth is Thomas Markle did not care that his daughter was pregnant and in a delicate state — and at a time when she was likely experiencing serious emotional distress, we all watched as he, enabled by people like Piers Morgan ramped up the attacks against her even more.

And the media rewarded him with attention.

Then Archie was born, and just when you thought Thomas could not be any more deplorable — the man who helped terrorized his pregnant daughter, putting her and her unborn child at risk, was now sitting on Piers Morgan’s bully pulpit demanding to see his grandson!

Even in this most vulnerable period of Meghan’s life, the relentless attacks kept coming, commentators and journalists made editorial choices to keep Thomas Markle in the spotlight and used his appearances to revisit the ‘cruel daughter’ narrative.

Incredibly, these things were happening all while the Met police had serious information about Thomas Markle’s alleged criminal acts. Which brings us to question why they failed to share the information with other relevant authorities? Were officers ever instructed not to pass the information on? Were anyone outside law enforcement aware of the letter and its content?

And the timing also raises a wider question about the media environment surrounding Thomas at the time.

What might have happened if the information had been passed to the appropriate authorities in 2019? It could have prompted further scrutiny or investigative steps, although we cannot know whether it would have led to an arrest or any particular outcome. At the very least, the relevant agencies would have had the opportunity to assess the information for themselves.

And if Thomas had faced serious public scrutiny at that time, what would that have meant for the British media’s continuing use of him as a weapon against his daughter?

Did any of the journalists who cultivated access to Thomas know about the allegations or the existence of the letter? If some did, would that knowledge have changed how they reported on him — or did they have reasons to keep him ‘in play’ as a recurring source of damaging stories against his daughter? Was he simply too useful an asset to the narrative they had built around Meghan for anyone to want to look too closely at the circumstances behind their estrangement?

For years, the public narrative condemned Meghan for maintaining her distance from her father, leaving little room for the possibility that her choice was based on grave concerns she could not safely or freely explain. Now, as new details come to light regarding the troubling information she was given, those past criticisms ring hollow.

Meghan Kept the Record. Now the Story Is Changing.

One of the most telling aspects of Meghan’s response is that she has not allowed the latest developments to become another round of public back-and-forth.

Her response has been measured — with one swift, concise public statement Meghan removed two of the most powerful weapons in the UK media’s arsenal that has been used against her over the years. Her toxic father and the uncaring daughter narrative.

And at the heart of that statement she referred to the letter, explained that she was given assurances that the allegations were being investigated, and reiterated the reason she kept her distance from her father and did not allow him access to her children: protection.

When we’ve seen the Met Police’s handling of this matter — initially stated no clear knowledge of it and later acknowledged its existence only after realizing Meghan still has her copy — One has to ask — what if Meghan had not held on to that document all these years? Could we honestly trust the Met police would have backed up her words?

Perhaps the most revealing part of this story is not that Meghan has suddenly found a new way to defend herself. It is that she made a decision to protect her family, preserved a record, and refused to let the press dictate how much of a deeply troubling situation she had to disclose.

The answers are not all in yet. But Meghan’s decision to preserve the letter and her careful handling of this latest development have made it harder to dismiss her choices as the whims of a cold or indifferent daughter.

The preservation of that letter matters. It is the anchor dropped in a storm of speculation, proving that her concerns were never a late invention, but a shield raised against a gathering tide.

She has allowed the quiet weight of the evidence to speak for itself. And in that stillness, the noise begins to fade. The story that was once weaponized against her has transformed into the very proof of her resilience — leaving the loudest detractors to reckon with the simple, enduring truth of a woman who chose to protect her children and her peace above all else.

The story that was used for years to undermine Meghan now appears to be the very story that vindicates her.
