The Festival of Good over Evil
Why we celebrate Vijayadashmi and the message it gives us today.
Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashmi, is one of the most important festivals in India. It is celebrated every year with devotion and joy. The festival marks the end of Navratri and Durga Puja. It is the day that reminds us of the power of truth and goodness.
The Story of Ram and Ravana
The story of Dussehra comes from the Ramayana. Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, wanted to defeat Lord Ram. To trick him, Ravana took the form of a saint and reached the forest where Mata Sita was staying. Sita Ji offered him food and respect as any saint should be treated. But Ravana betrayed her trust and kidnapped her in his flying chariot Pushpak Vimaan.
Lord Ram was heartbroken but he did not give up. With the help of his brother Lakshman, the vanar army, and Hanuman, he marched to Lanka. A fierce battle was fought between the two sides. On this day, Lord Ram killed Ravana and freed Mata Sita. This victory of Ram over Ravana is celebrated as Dussehra. It teaches us that betrayal and pride cannot win against truth and dharma.
