【NB-IoT module】Ai-Thinker EC series firmware update tutorial
#NB-IoT module
EC series modules is the NB-IoT modules develop and designed by Ai-Thinker team. The factory firmware is AT firmware and supports TCP, HTTP/S, MQTT and other network protocols.
Module introduction
NB-IoT module EC series currently has 3 modules designed, namely:
EC-01: EC-01 module and A9 are pin-to-pin packages, only support NB
EC-01G: EC-01G module and A9G are pin-to-pin packages, support NB, GPS
EC-01F: only support NB
Development board introduction
In order to better let everyone debug the program, we have also designed three development boards, which are:
EC-01-Kit: equipped with EC-01 module
EC-01G-Kit: equipped with EC-01G module
EC-01F-Kit: equipped with EC-01F module
Among them, EC-01-Kit and EC-01G-Kit share the same baseboard.

After upzip, run in the file: FlashTools.exe
CH340 driver download address: link
Unzip and install the CH340 driver. After plugging in the development board, the following information will be displayed in the device manager:
To re-burn the firmware, you need to prepare the above two software.
Hardware preparation
EC series development board + Micro USB data cable
EC series module + several Dupont cables + USB to TTL module
Wiring method
(1) Development board wiring
The wiring of the EC series development board is consistent, you only need to insert the Mirco-USB data cable.
(2) Module wiring
The module wiring needs to be based on the module pins, and only four wires need to be soldered:
- 3V3 ：module power supply，connect to 3.3V of TTL module
- GND：module power ground, connected to the GND of the TTL module
- UART1_TXD: module UART1 TX is connected to the RXD of the TTL module
- UART1_RXD： module UART1 RX is connected to the TXD of the TTL module

Usually has two firmware：
- bootloader：Boot firmware, necessary firmware, responsible for booting the program, generally remains unchanged
- system：System firmware, user programs

Generally, the firmware we provide is AT firmware. After burning is completed, open the serial port debugging software. The serial port communication information is as follows:
Baud rate: 9600
Stop bit: 1bit
Data bit: 8bit
Check bit: None
After connecting to the development board, press the RST key on the development board, and the serial port will print information:
Send test command：AT\r\n
After send, module return: OK, is firmware update success
Erase firmware
If you want to erase the program before burning, you can check the “Erase All…” option:
- Erase All, included botloader
- If only erase, no program new firmware, can cancel seltect it.
