There’s a specific moment every ML engineer remembers. You’ve been training an XGBoost model for three hours. Your machine is hot. Your patience is thinner. Then a colleague leans over and says, “Have you tried LightGBM?” You roll your eyes. You’ve heard the name. You try it anyway. Fourteen minutes later you have a better model.
That was the story for most people in 2017 when Microsoft Research open-sourced LightGBM. And while gradient boosting has continued to evolve — CatBoost, XGBoost 2.x, NGBoost — LightGBM has remained the workhorse of competitive ML, production fraud detection, financial modeling, click-through prediction, and a hundred other real-world applications where you need something fast, accurate, and deployable without a GPU cluster.
