How Amazon Redshift is Changing the Game for Data Warehousing!!
Ark Innovation article by Rahul.
In this article I will try to explain what is amazon redshift and how it is transforming the data warehousing from traditional way. Also I will end this article with a walkthrough process how can we load the data from s3 to redshift using glue.
Amazon Redshift: The Cloud-Based Data Warehousing Solution
In today’s digital age, businesses of all sizes are generating and collecting vast amounts of data. This data can be used to inform and drive business decisions, but only if it’s properly managed and analyzed. That’s where data warehousing comes in. A data warehouse is a large, centralized repository of data that allows organizations to store, manage, and analyze their data at scale. And when it comes to cloud-based data warehousing, Amazon Redshift is one of the leading solutions on the market.
What is Amazon Redshift?
Amazon Redshift is a cloud-based data warehousing service that provides a fast, scalable, and cost-effective way to store and analyze data. It’s built on top of PostgreSQL, a popular open-source relational database management system. With Amazon Redshift, you can easily and securely store petabytes of data and analyze it using a wide range of analytics tools.
Steps to load the data from S3 bucket to Redshift in Glue:

Create an S3 bucket: First, create an S3 bucket to store your data. This bucket will be used as the source for your data load job.
Create a Redshift cluster: Next, create a Redshift cluster in the AWS Management Console. This cluster will be used as the destination for your data load job.
Set up AWS Glue: Create an AWS Glue crawler to scan your S3 bucket and create a schema for your data. This step is optional if you already have a schema defined for your data.
Create an AWS Glue job: Create an AWS Glue job to load data from your S3 bucket to your Redshift cluster. In the job configuration, specify the source S3 bucket and the target Redshift cluster, as well as any transformation steps you want to apply to your data.
Schedule the job: Set up a schedule for your AWS Glue job to run on a regular basis. You can choose a specific time or frequency, such as every hour or every day.
Monitor the job: Once the job is running, monitor its progress using the AWS Glue console. You can view job metrics, error logs, and other information to ensure that your data is being loaded correctly.
#GLUE JOB CODE:
import sys
from awsglue.transforms import *
from awsglue.utils import getResolvedOptions
from awsglue.dynamicframe import DynamicFrame
from awsglue.context import GlueContext
from awsglue.job import Job
## @params: [test_job]
args = getResolvedOptions(sys.argv, ['test_job'])
## Create a GlueContext
glueContext = GlueContext(SparkContext.getOrCreate())
## Initialize the job
job = Job(glueContext)
job.init(args['JOB_NAME'], args)
## Load data from S3
datasource0 = glueContext.create_dynamic_frame.from_options(
connection_type="s3",
connection_options={"paths": ["s3://test_folder/s3_to_redshift/"]},
format="csv",
format_options={"withHeader": True, "delimiter": ","}
)
## Transform data (if necessary)
## For example: apply a filter to remove rows that meet certain criteria
filtered_data = Filter.apply(frame=datasource0, f=lambda x: x['column_name'] != 'value')
## Convert DynamicFrame to DataFrame
dataframe = filtered_data.toDF()
## Use the Redshift COPY command to load data
redshift_conn = boto3.client('redshift')
copy_query = """
COPY test_table
FROM 's3://test_folder/s3_to_redshift/test_data.csv'
CREDENTIALS 'aws_iam_role=arn:aws:iam::XXXXXXXXXXXXXX'
FORMAT AS CSV
IGNOREHEADER 1
DELIMITER ','
"""
redshift_conn.execute(copy_query)
## Write data to Redshift
dataframe.write \
.format("jdbc") \
.option("url", "jdbc:redshift://your-redshift-cluster-endpoint:5439/XXXXXX") \
.option("dbtable", "test_table") \
.option("user", "XXXXX") \
.option("password", "XXXXX") \
.option("redshiftTmpDir", "s3://test_folder/redshift-tmp-dir/") \
.option("aws_iam_role", "arn:aws:iam::xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx") \
.mode("append") \
.save()
## Commit the job
job.commit()Result:
Conclusion
