ANAF steps up tax checks. Are you ready?
Tax alert 2027: individuals with non-wage income are in the tax authority’s sights.
What you need to know before you receive a notice
With Romania facing a budget deficit, ANAF, the Romanian tax authority, has stepped up its checks in recent months on individuals who earned income outside their salary, from both domestic and foreign sources.
The income types in focus include:
- Interest
- Dividends
- Stocks and ETFs
- Rent
- Royalties
- Cryptocurrencies
Limitation period – act now
ANAF can check income earned from 2021 onward. The oldest year, 2021, becomes time-barred on July 1, 2027, which means notices can cover any tax year from 2021 to 2026.

In practice, the authorities are sending notices to individuals who did not file the single tax return (declarația unică), the form used to declare all non-wage income, on time. If you do not respond by the deadline in the notice, the consequences can be severe.
What can happen if you don’t respond
- The notice. ANAF sends a notice about undeclared income.
- An ex officio assessment, if you don’t respond. The amounts set may be higher than the real ones.
- Enforcement. Bank accounts frozen or amounts withheld through your employer.
The main risk is not necessarily the tax you owe, but the fact that an ex officio assessment can far exceed your real obligation, precisely because ANAF estimates the income without knowing the applicable costs and deductions.
What you can do now
Check your tax situation in the Virtual Private Space (SPV), ANAF’s online portal, identify any missing or incomplete returns and correct them before you receive a notice. If you have several years of undeclared income, voluntary regularization is always better than an audit started by ANAF.
If your tax situation is complex — income from several sources, international transactions or several undeclared years — a tax specialist can make the difference between a correct regularization and a disputable tax assessment.
