Python is the most widely used programming language for applications involving Data Science and Machine Learning. There are specific reasons on why Python is most preferred than others. That said, it is also not the only programming language for Data Science & ML. There are other programming languages such as R, Java, Scala and C++. Python is one of the best ecosystems for doing data science and machine learning.

In this Blog we will see why Python is specifically the most preferred and what advantages does it provide for Data Science and ML. Also, we will see how Python can be used alongside in Industrial Automation applications.

Why Python is the most preferred language for Data Science & ML ?

  1. Easy to learn and read: Python has relatively simple syntax, so you can spend more time thinking about the data and model rather than complicated programming syntax.

2. Huge ecosystem of libraries: Python has excellent libraries for almost every part of the data-science workflow:

  • Numpy — For math, arrays, scientific and numerical computing
  • Pandas — It is used extensively for data analysis, it is like an Microsoft Excel for Python
  • Matplotlib / Seaborn — This library is used for graphs & visualizations
  • Scipy — This library is mainly used for scientific applications with python
  • Scikit —Mainly for ttraditional machine learning, Scikit-learn is same as Scikit
  • Tensor Flow — ML / Deep learning framework (overlaps with PyTorch) — Low Level
  • PyTorch — Deep learning framework (LLM, AI) — High Level
  • Keras — Deep learning API (neural networks building) — High Level
  • Open CV — computer vision

3. Excellent for experimentation: Data science involves a lot of experimentation.

This involves following steps: Load data → clean it → visualize it → try a model → evaluate → change something → try again.

Python and Jupyter make this workflow very convenient.

4. Strong community: Python has a strong and huge community around AI, ML, statistics, and scientific computing. So it is easy for one to find Tutorials, Documentation, Open-source projects, Stack Overflow answers, Research implementation, Courses, Pre-trained models. This makes learning considerably easier.

5. Used in industry and research:

Python is widely used across areas such as Machine learning, Generative AI, Computer vision, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Data analytics, Scientific research, Automation, Data engineering. So learning Python gives you a skill that transfers across many different areas.

How can ML help with Industrial Automation?

  • Predictive maintenance — Use vibration, temperature, pressure, current, etc. to detect abnormal behavior and predict possible equipment problems.
  • Process optimization — Learn from past process data and suggest better operating conditions, such as temperature, pressure, flow, speed, or setpoints.
  • Anomaly detection — Identify unusual patterns in time-series data that may not have clear alarm limits. This can be useful for machines, processes, and even utilities.
  • Energy optimization — Analyze energy consumption and process conditions to identify unnecessary energy use and find more efficient operating conditions.
  • Soft sensors — Sometimes a variable is difficult or expensive to measure continuously. ML can estimate it using other available measurements.
  • Fault detection — Help identify the likely source of a problem by looking at combinations of alarms, sensor values, and process behavior.
  • Computer vision — Cameras + ML can be used for product inspection, detecting defects, checking assembly, or monitoring safety conditions.
  • Operator support — ML can help highlight important events or recommend where an operator should look, rather than making the operator search through thousands of tags and alarms.

I wouldn’t put ML directly in charge of safety-critical control just because it gives a good prediction. PLC logic, interlocks, trips, and functional safety systems should remain predictable and properly validated.

ML is often more useful around the control system — helping with monitoring, prediction, optimization, quality, maintenance, and decision support. Industrial automation generates a huge amount of time-series data.

I believe the next step is not just collecting this data, but making use of it. ML can help us detect abnormal behavior, improve maintenance, optimize processes and energy consumption, predict quality, and support operators in making better decisions.
