Splatfest in Splatoon 3 — What are the problems? (Game Analysis)
Explanation is very important and Splatoon 3 do not so well…
Preface
Another Splatfest in Splatoon 3 just finished not so long. It is my 40th (around that) Splatfest since Splatoon 1, which is still fun and congratulations to Team Water! You made it so good!
However, this Splatfest is too bit weird. There are a lot of rage comments from across Reddit and Twitter. About idols (which I skipped because it is stupid), attacker in Tri-color Turf War attack each other, or even Classic Turf War is a bad mode!?
My Personal Thoughts
I prefer social on this day is filled with drama and a bit lack of respect for the opinion of others. It is prominent since you cannot really see each other. It is like each person is in the car and spreading your lousy word in your vehicles. Just change your car to your social, and everyone sees it.
I must admit that I also lost it many times, and I still warn myself frequently whenever I comment on someone’s post on the internet. The world is filled with toxic and too sensitive enough.
However, I think this Splatfest (or maybe this game) is not as polished as it should be in Splatoon 2, and there is a lot of misunderstanding in this game. Which game should explain it better, be more honest and clarify.
Even so, You may only partially agree with this article. That’s fine; feel free to comment, and we will respect comments together.
Why am I so serious about this game?
It is because I love this game. I am weak at shooting games; this is the first game I feel confident about.
Splatoon is genius. An FPS perspective. — https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/84j0qu/splatoon_is_genius_an_fps_perspective/
Also, This Splatfest is pretty decent; it’s not bad at all. These are just some minor points I would like to point out. It is an excellent chance to analyse a game we love, and if the developer listens to us, it could be better or if it’s not. It is fun to discuss how to improve this game and let the mind run wild for your creativity.
Is “Turf War” really a problem?
Turf War has some negative comments, and they prefer rules over anarchy mode but is “Turf War” really a problem?
If it is just the rule, I did say Turf War is still one of the most creative and innovative shooting games. Honestly, It is simple and exciting. Even 0.1% of ink turfed can change the result. This is not a baby mode; each player has a role similar to MOBA games.
If it has a problem: I agree that turf war is too easy to dominate from Splatoon 1 to 3, but it is still good anyway. I may discuss this in the next part if I have time. However, It is the way Turf War is!
So, If “Turf War” is not a problem, What is the problem then?
When you cut some content, You must give enhance your old content.
First, Even we said Turf War mode is fantastic. We cannot have options to play all four anarchy rules. That means 4 of 5 rules are cut out while playing Splatfest, and we need new content to fill in.
In Splatoon 2, They announce a special stage called “Shifty Station”, filled with many mechanics from hero mode. Just only one special stage enough? It is enough. Why?
- This unique stage is newly created in every Splatfest. That means you must learn it in every Splatfest.
- However, you will learn it with familiar turf mode, which makes you understand it more quickly according to the duration of Splatfest, which only has 2 days.
- The map is also tailor-made for Turf War. That means it enhanced the enjoyment of Turf War more than the usual match.
Of course, In Splatoon 3, They try to introduce new content as a new mode, like a Tri-colored Turf War. We will analyse it later, but what “Tri-colored Turf War” affects our “Classic Turf War”?
- It does not enhance Turf War as it should in Splatoon 2. Actually, It is the same vibes as usual days. Not so fresh and memorable.
- Due to matchmaking, the Tri-colored Turf War is not triggered as frequently as it should be. Even the Attacker team selects the Tri-colored Turf War. Still, it returns to a classic turf war instead.
- In addition, the defender team and players from pro mode cannot select it. Therefore, Tri-colored Turf War does not actually have an impact. It is just a garnish to Splatfest.
It is a Bad User Experience on a Tri-color Turf War.
Speaking of a Tri-color Turf War. There are some negative comments too.

Honestly, I think “rules” are very creative again (Nintendo is the god of rules makers, I worshipped them.) They combined actual turf war and Anarchy Battle. I very much appreciate that, but what is the problem?:
- It is a new mode with somewhat complexity relation: What is “complexity”? The complexity comes from the rule that it is more complex than a Turf War. The relationship between the three teams, aside from attacker and defender, is competitive and somewhat cooperative (attack the defender) and competitive (steal the signal) between two attacker teams. That’s why some comments prefer the simpler 4v4v4 or 3v3v3 fully competitive. If I see opponents, shoot it. Why it is so hard.
- Yes, it is complex, but you have only 1 day to learn about this. Mastering rules is more challenging than mastering maps, but this mode can play only in the second half of Splatfest. Practically, Newcomers are increasing every day, and every Splatfest will have new players confusing this new mode. Many posts still ask, “Why the hell are two attacking teams not cooperating with each other.”
- (For Attacker) If we are not fully cooperating, please make it seem like we are on a different sides. Many posts ask, “Why the hell are two attacking teams not cooperating with each other.” Why do they ask that? Because of simply “Victory” and “Defeat” on the result screen. Attackers from two teams despite how much signal they can capture. If any, the attacker team gets more turfed than the defender team. You will get “Victory” Wow! Sound very cooperative, which is really not!
- (For Attacker) The misleading points about cooperation and competition. A minor issue about wording is not so little misleading in this mode because the “Victory” and “Defeat” do not have any points in Tri-colored Turf War. Because even if two teams “Defeat” together, two teams do not get the exact result.
For example, even if Attacker“Defeat” but one attacker team can secure two signals. Still, another attacker team do not get any signals. Is a attacker team that secured two signals actually “Defeat”? Because you get 5,000 clouts, but “Oh, We still defeat.” Is this reasonable?.
- You will see that misleading words can make players misunderstand a rule and make it should not as fun as it should be.
Actually, the Defender team also gets unbalanced treatment in the Tri-color battle. Still, I need to say it better since I am not a defender of this Splatfest. Some comments on the Team Water feel more positive with this Splatfest being a defender, and Splatoon Team is working on this neat update!
Again, It is an excellent rule, but the explanation is also a point to make it great.
It is a whole misleading from the tip of the iceberg.
Speaking of using the word. There are other points that I cannot look ahead is how to name Splatfest “Pro” and “Open” modes. It sounds like “Pro” is for high-rank players, and “Open” is for everyone. Right?
No! The only difference is that “Pro” can play for single players only, and “Open” for 1–4 players. Then what is the point of the “Pro” and “Open” modes? So…
1. If you are Solo Player, You think that mode that “Restricted only Solo” and “Mode that has both Solo and pre-made Team”. Which one is more disadvantageous?
2. If you are a newcomer and go to the first Splatfest, You only know the mode’s name. Will you go to “Pro” or “Open”?
If your answer is “Mode that has both Solo and pre-made Team” and “Open”,. Then, This seems to have some problems, which is the problem newcomers face in Splatfest. Go to “Open”, then get splatted by the pre-made team, lose clout to another team, and another post of “My team is freaking weak.”.
Naming it more clearly should improve understanding. Any name that people can see and classify is “Solo Only” mode, which is “Solo and Party” mode and prevents loss from a new face.
Again, Why are you so serious with word and explanation. Can you ask it on Social Media? Isn’t it 2022 now?
I agree that you can ask it on social media. Still, the problem comes not only from Newcomer’s questions but also from the expert’s answers.
I would like to ask the experts in the group: Are you bored when you see a lot of the same questions in your groups? Did you want to know the community filled with artwork, highlights and discussion more than many of the same questions about the game? (Okay, There are also toxic posts, but we cannot do that, ignore them.) The game should be well explained first, formally called User Experience.
Conclusion
Splatoon and Splatfest will be better over time. It which is excellent if Splatoon could improve this minor thing about explanation it will be great. This game has come far, and the community is expanded (but still positive, I have faith because it is better than many games I have played.) So it would be good if newcomers could learn from games. Actually, I can further discuss on Turf War and Anarchy Mode but next time…
…Stay Fresh together!
