Install VyOS on VirtualBox

This guide will cover how to install VyOS on VirtualBox properly
(homelab troubleshooting)

The first step grab the ISO:
https://vyos.net/get/nightly-builds/

Installed in VirtualBox, do the following steps:

Default username and password for VyOS (user: vyos, passwd: vyos). You must change the password for security risk, as default passwords are not recommended but up to you.

This means you’re in operational mode ($) on the router type: ‘install image’

Once the image is installed, a name is given plus a storage drive is selected. Instead of rebooting, shut down the virtual machine entirely to remove the ISO from the Settings (Machine -> Settings -> Basic -> Storage), and it should only be showing the .vdi file

Now, when making configurations and logging back in after rebooting, all configurations will be in place as long as you ‘commit’, ‘save’, and ‘exit’ to save configurations.

If you want to make VyOS have the features of a WAN and LAN for the internet and your private network (Machine -> Settings -> Expert -> Network) instead of using NAT, please switch to “Bridged Adapter” as it will be easier to configure later because it’ll use your physical router configuration from your host. If you would like to continue using NAT, refer to this guide: https://www.nakivo.com/blog/virtualbox-network-setting-guide/

This will act as the WAN (Wide Area Network)

NAT stands for Network Address Translation, and it functions by translating your private IP address into a public IP address to use the internet from the router (note: multiple devices on your network will be tied to this one public IP address)

LAN configuration (Adapter 2)

The settings path is the same as before (Machine -> Settings -> Expert -> Network)

LAN (Local Area Network)

This will act as your local area network for your other virtual machines on the network that will be connected to the router for internet access (note: every other virtual machine's Network Adapter should have Internal Network as the only option for this to work)

I hope this helped make sure to share with friends who might also find this guide helpful and put in the comments alternative ways to this approach giving the same results.
