Hello Litterpickers!

The site is being worked on to fix the timer and zoom link to the community Zoom meetings, which are at 6 p.m. GMT+1 (Irish time) every Friday at this link https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86284514720?pwd=OWpqaE1DSG1aWktYQTNDYmR0ZnBKUT09.

We have created a discord server, though it is still being set up. You can join here, feedback is appreciated: https://discord.com/invite/NAEUBwtAhT

If your country/city/state is not appearing on the world cup page, please get in contact with us so that it can be manually added. There is a bug that we’d like to identify that is preventing cities and states from being added automatically. In the meantime, the best way to get missing places added to the global leaderboard is to bring them up at the community meetings so they can be added by us.

Littercoin is getting closer to our projected launch date of 4/20. If you’d like to help test it or design the webpage for it on our website, please let us know by joining slack, reviewing the code on github, or testing the pre-production smart contract on our staging server https://olmdev.online/littercoin

There was a discussion on the goals for OLM data, which we will share here for those who may not have heard them.

  • While currently unavailable, we would like to have bulk photo downloading available in the future, however right now it is cost-prohibitive. Without that, the monthly server costs are ~$150 a month, and adding that feature would increase those costs significantly.
  • Tagging- you can extend our pre-defined tags with custom tags, which opens up an unlimited number of feature classifications. This is not limited to litter, meaning you can use OpenLitterMap to map anything. OpenLitterMap has been used to map biodiversity loss, landslides, storm damage, broken infrastructure, dereliction, and a lot more.
  • In the future we will totally rework the tagging system and use the given custom tags to help shape our next model.

Fred: We talked about Littercoin again, and about people outside OLM putting money into the smart contract and how to ‘reward’ them. It would be nice to have some kind of leaderboard (think about ‘some of the OLM-features have been made possible with the help of…’
Fred: A question was asked to Seán how he got into doing OLM. For me personally, this story is already well known, but always good to talk about it. For me, the meetup itself was not that special this time, so i was doing other stuff as well.

During this meetup we worked on the “upload without tagging” feature that is coming to the next mobile app release.

As usual, there is always room for a lot of interaction and questions between the people present, and this time a very interesting website was introduced: github.dev. This tool makes it easy to make changes to the OLM code, without needing to download and set up the OLM environment. We walked through how to create a branch and pull request, having never done so before. This could be used to make many file changes that don’t require running commands, such as updating translations and correcting errors on the website that could open participation in OpenLitterMap up to much larger numbers of people.

We badly need time to start working on documentation to show people how to set up the OLM environment from scratch, and now we need to show people how to use the more accessible github.dev interface. If you are experienced with OLM and this is a project you’d like to help with, get in touch with us on Slack or Discord.

OLM #55

This week we were joined from new friends from Codeando Mexico a group that teaches people how to code and work on technology for good in Mexico. Codeando are interested in helping us run a cleanup and data collection plus open source hackathon on the litter situation across latin America.

Codeando have fantastic experience in running focus groups and generating actionable feedback from participants and it would be wonderful to get some extra diversification mixed into our crucible to stir things up even further.

This week we also helped Pike in Malawi tell his story about the humanitarian natural disaster relief work he is doing across the country. Pike has started receiving small crypto donations and is using OpenLitterMap technology to track his expenditure, tell his story, and communicate his impact.

With our custom tags, you can basically tell any story you want.

During the meeting, we also completed and released the OLM Twitter Bot, a new automated twitter bot that is going to post a daily impact report of the impact made by the global openlittermap community. Follow along for nothing but daily impact reports at OLM_bot
