I Asked AI to Read the Waves — Here’s What Happened
Can ChatGPT Image and NanoBanana actually decode Elliott Wave patterns that human analysts spend years mastering?
There is a peculiar kind of madness in technical analysis. You stare at a price chart — a jagged mountain range of human fear and greed — and try to divine the future from its shape. Elliott Wave Theory takes this to its elegant extreme: the idea that markets move in predictable, fractal rhythms that mirror the collective psychology of millions of traders. Five waves up, three waves down, forever and ever, world without end.
It takes most analysts years to develop a reliable eye for these patterns. The rules are strict, the sub-waves are nested, and the counting can spiral into maddening ambiguity. So naturally, I asked AI to do it for me.
Specifically, I tested two tools against the real-world charts: ChatGPT with GPT Image 5.2 (OpenAI’s latest multimodal model) and NanoBanana (a purpose-built AI charting tool). The results were illuminating — sometimes brilliantly so, sometimes embarrassingly wrong.
