Tokio Creator Carl Lerche Just Built “Topcoat”: A Server-Rendered Web Framework in Rust That Streams HTML Instead of Heavy JS
Why one of Rust’s most influential systems engineers is betting on server-rendered HTML snippets, direct database queries via Toasty ORM, and compiling a subset of Rust into JavaScript — now updated to Topcoat 0.11.
When Carl Lerche starts a new open-source project, the Rust community pays attention.
As the creator of Tokio — the asynchronous runtime that powers the vast majority of production Rust servers, cloud infrastructure, and networking stacks — Lerche has spent a decade solving the hardest low-level concurrency problems in software engineering.
Now, he has turned his attention to the full-stack web with Topcoat: a new Rust framework designed from the ground up for building server-rendered web applications.
And with the release of Topcoat 0.11, which adds built-in localization with Fluent translations plus number and date formatting, Lerche’s vision for ergonomic, database-driven Rust web development is coming into sharp focus.
