How Long Does SEO Take?
When I’m considering SEO content writing services with a new customer, this is the question I’m asked the most.
It’s very understandable. You’re paying for a service, so you want to know when you’ll start seeing results, right?
The issue is that I can calculate how long it will take my agency to create content that will rank. However, I am unable to predict how long it will take to rank.
Below, I’ll explain the reasons. If you’re in a rush, the TL;DR version is that ranking takes 3 to 12 months.
Why is there such a disparity?
Is the entire industry evading the topic or unable to provide a clear response?
No!
On the contrary, I’d love to notify you when you should set your alarm to check your ranking reports. Here’s why neither I nor any other sincere business insider can give you an exact ranking timeframe:
- SEO doesn’t happen in a void
You aren’t the only one who publishes articles or other types of information on a particular subject. By 2020, there will be over 600 million blogs! More than 4.5 million blog articles have been written today alone, as of the time I write this!
Do you follow where I’m heading with this?
On the internet, everything is moving and changing. So it’s impossible to forecast what will happen in a week, let alone a month.

2. Competition is quite important!
In a low-competition business, it takes an average of 3 months for a piece of content to rank in a good position.
In a high-competition business, it takes an average of 12 months for a piece of content to rank well.
Does this indicate that the ranks will remain the same after three and twelve months, respectively?
Not in the least!
3. Content that is older performs better
With time, better pieces that target the same keywords are added, your content’s ranking may diminish over time. However, it can — and typically does — improve your ranking.
Content having a proven track record is favoured by search engines. If you want to increase or at least preserve the rating of a piece of material that is highly important to you, follow these steps:
Make sure it gets new backlinks on a regular basis.
Long after you’ve released it, keep advertising it (for example, via email and social media).
Add to this list! Evergreen content (that is, content that isn’t about current events, news, or other topics that quickly become outdated) can rank for years. Especially if you “refurbish” it on a regular basis. Add a few new paragraphs, double-check the links, and don’t fail to include “Modified on…” at the top.
So, no SERP rank is guaranteed. After more than a year since their publication date, blog postings on my agency’s website have gone from position five to position one. Search engine optimization is a long-term endeavour!
4. Links are gathered over time.
Backlinks are gold in the SEO world! However, if your brand-new piece of content receives hundreds of them in less than a week, Google will immediately suspect foul play. It takes time to build natural links. It takes time to earn them, and it takes time for them to spread.
The more backlinks your content receives from high-quality, high-DA websites, the better it will rank. Certain sorts of content rank more quickly than others. Original research reports, surveys, various experiments, and round-ups all perform exceptionally well. Of course, assuming they are well-written and include useful information.
Last but not least,
If you want to see results right now, don’t start investing in SEO. PPC advertising are a significantly more effective technique to generate immediate sales and leads.
If you’re in it for the long haul, however, SEO is essential. SEO takes time to implement, but once completed, you will reap the benefits for years to come with no further cost.
