TL:DR

  • I’ve been looking into Mac uninstaller apps to free up space (and speed) on my Mac.
  • I came up with four great options, including my favorite, CleanMyMac.
  • What you choose can depend on your budget or level of expertise.
  • Sometimes it comes down to preference; one tool might work better for you than another.

Regular readers will know that I love researching new technology and tools — but my system has mixed feelings! I often end up with too many apps that compromise storage and performance.

So I decided to do some research to find the best options for a Mac app uninstaller, and found several that I loved. I called on my favorite GPT assistant to make this process really easy. Try it yourself, all you need to do is add your goals and preferences and let it work its magic!

Let’s dive in and see how my research uncovered the best Mac uninstaller (IMO) and the pros and cons of the top contenders.

My favorite Mac uninstaller apps

So, here’s my rundown:

  1. Delete Apps: I liked the free entry-point option

Delete Apps is billed as a comprehensive free Mac uninstaller app that gets rid of all that system junk. The interface is a little dull, but the tool does what it says on the tin!

  • Main benefit? I like how it resets applications back to their factory settings (if you enable this). Great for me if I’ve over-tinkered and made my system unwieldy!
  • Main downside? Lightly tested on the market, and the reviews are varied. My trial worked nicely, but you might prefer other uninstaller Mac options.

2. CleanMyMac: This felt like the ultimate Mac health check!

CleanMyMac is an all-in-one cleaner, speed booster, and app uninstaller for Mac, with more than 25 tools ready to automatically delete that unwanted junk, expired apps, and duplicate files.

It’s a dream for getting rid of all that pesky hidden stuff you’re not even aware of in the background, and as Cliff Joseph from MacWorld points out, “if you don’t know your DNS cache from your universal binaries, then a well-designed app such as CleanMacMac can simplify these tasks for you, and help to keep your Mac fighting fit…”

  • Main benefit? Powerful, simple to use, and a beautiful all-in-one interface that makes your Mac junk clean up as simple as pressing a button and watching it go!
  • Main downside? The older uninstaller Mac version didn’t have a duplicate file finder, so check your version.

3. App Zapper: I loved the drag ‘n drop functionality

OK, I’ll be honest, App Zapper looks like it was created in a garage by your nephew. However, this handy Mac uninstaller app has plenty of fans, and it’s effortless. Simply drag your target app onto the zapper box and watch as it performs an auto cleanup.

  • Main benefit? It will completely uninstall unwanted apps, including all the junk they usually leave behind. And I love the ‘undo’ feature if you change your mind!
  • Main downside? Not everyone loves the “zapping” sound and finds the animation gimmicky (personally, I think it’s kinda fun).

4. CleanMyApp Uninstaller: Fuss-free deletion

CleanMyApp from the App Store is, like the previous tool, a good budget option. It looks slightly classier, with a cleaner interface, and it promises to cleanly uninstall any apps that I no longer require.

  • Main benefit? It’ll cleanly remove app icons from Launchpad as well, and if you use a lot of Chrome extensions, it’ll delete those for you.
  • Main downside? As you can see from my screenshot, the only criticism I had was that the scanning of apps before I removed them was a bit slow.

Give some of my suggestions a try and let me know what you think

I hope you’ve found my research useful, and if it saves you time and hassle, I’d be delighted! Why not give your Mac a thorough cleanup over the next few weeks?

And do let me know in the comments below if you try my recommendations, or if you have any other hot tips to share!
