The Day Everything Changed
There are moments in life that divide everything into a “before” and an “after.”
For Bisma, it was the day she heard the words, “You have cancer.”
Just weeks earlier, she was an architecture student worrying about assignments, deadlines, and what the future might look like. The fever, the night sweats, and the swelling in her neck seemed like things that would eventually go away. Instead, they led to a diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma.
I often wonder what goes through someone’s mind in that moment. Is it fear? Disbelief? Or the quiet realization that life is about to become something completely different?

Cancer has a way of putting everything on pause. Plans are replaced with appointments. Dreams wait while treatment begins. Days become a cycle of tests, medicines, and hoping for good news.
At Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, Bisma began that journey. It wasn’t easy. There were difficult days, moments when giving up probably felt easier than carrying on. But she didn’t walk through it alone. Her family stood beside her. Doctors and nurses became a source of strength. And behind the scenes were thousands of people who had donated, making treatment possible for patients who couldn’t afford it.
Eventually, the treatment worked.
She didn’t just beat cancer. She got her future back.
When I read stories like Bisma’s, I’m reminded that hope isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s simply showing up for another chemotherapy session. Sometimes it’s a doctor refusing to give up. Sometimes it’s a stranger choosing to donate without ever meeting the person they’re helping.
We often think changing the world requires something extraordinary. Maybe it starts with something much smaller caring enough to help someone you’ll never know.
Because for someone fighting cancer, that kindness could mean one more chance, one more tomorrow, and one more dream that gets to live on.
