When Men Say They Only Want a “Natural” Woman
The “natural” woman men say they want is the result of hours of invisible effort.
We were eight people, four couples, passing around a bottle of red and arguing over whether pineapple belongs on pizza. Marcus, Saba’s husband’s college friend visiting from out of town, pulled out his phone.
“This,” he said, sliding it across the table, “is what a real woman looks like. Natural. Effortless. Nothing fake, overdone stuff.”
The photo was of a fitness influencer mid-pose on a sun-drenched beach. Bouncy waves. Luminous skin. Perfectly shaped brows arching over dewy eyes. I studied the photo for a moment. Then I looked at Marcus.
“She’s wearing at least six products,” I said.
…and the dinner got interesting.
Men have built an entire mythology around “natural woman.” Dating app bios, unsolicited comments at dinner parties, magazine think pieces about the death of femininity, the preference for a natural woman is a personality type for a certain kind of man.
…and yet, every single time you ask them to point one out, they point at the same thing: a woman who has spent considerable time, money, and energy making herself look like she hasn’t.
