BURNY…soaking up the sun!

His name is Burny…my wife picked the name. I started rehabilitating pigeons 4 years ago. My current job in manufacturing lends itself to finding young or injured pigeons.

I know pigeons well, as I raised and cared for literally hundreds of pigeons during my youth.

They are not filthy, or disease laden, or ugly.

Young pigeons, or young goats or sharks or whatever creature you want to substitute in there, require nurturing and love, not to mention food, water and shelter.

When people think about pigeons, most people think dirty, disease infested flying rats. Probably because they just do not understand them.

Me…I think they beautiful, warm, curious, and very smart birds. Maybe people see these birds by the hundreds in urban centres as a civic nuisance and leaving behind pigeon guano (poop).

Not me!

For me, they are the most fascinating bird alive for several reasons. Some of which I will cover to support my position. Some of these facts are amazing.

1) Pigeons are one of the most intelligent birds on the planet. Research has shown them to recognize themselves in the mirror, identify letters of the alphabet and differentiate between humans.
