Agent Harness: The Infrastructure That Makes LLM Agents Work
Agent Harness is becoming a popular buzzword lately. But what exactly does it mean? And what features does it have?
Let’s dive in and unpack this concept.
What is Agent Harness
Agent Harness is the engineering infrastructure and operational layer wrapped around LLMs.
It isn’t the model itself, nor just a prompt. Instead, harness puts the model into a practical system, one that can be executed, monitored, controlled, and recovered.
Agent Harness can ben framed as the unifying layer that coordinates externalized memory, skills, and protocols into governed execution, aiming to make agent behavior more reliable in practice.
More concretely:
- Memory: Externalizes state so the agent doesn’t have to rely solely on context windows to remember past interactions.
- Skills: Externalize procedural know-how, including workflows, heuristics, and constraints, so the agent can select and follow reusable guidance instead of reinventing the process each time.
- Protocols: Externalize interaction contracts, including schemas, lifecycle rules, permissions, and discovery metadata, so tool use, agent handoffs, and user-facing interactions become more structured and governable.
