Must-Know AI Agent Security Concepts for Beginners
AI agents need access to external systems to perform tasks. They may need to query databases, call APIs, retrieve files, or execute operations on behalf of users.
But granting an agent access to these resources introduces a security problem.
In this article we are going to cover how the following mechanisms help address this problem:
- Dynamic credentials: Control how applications obtain credentials.
- Just-In-Time (JIT) access: Control when identities receive permissions and how long they retain them.
1. Dynamic Credentials
Traditionally, developers store credentials directly inside applications.
For example:
DATABASE_URL = "postgresql://admin:password@localhost/hr"
LLM_API_KEY = "your-api-key"The problem is that these credentials are static.
Static credentials create long-term security exposure because they remain valid until explicitly invalidated.
If an application is compromised, an attacker may gain access to credentials that continue working long after the original incident.
Dynamic credentials replace permanently stored credentials with temporary credentials…
