I often get asked why I don’t like my hometown and why I can’t imagine my life there anymore.
If you read on, you’ll probably notice that most of this revolves around the experiences of women. That’s because I’m one, and I’ve watched so many of them live this way in my family and around me. I’ve noticed it more since moving out, and I still can’t stop noticing whenever I’m back.
It also feels strange to have to acknowledge all of this now, let alone talk about it with the people around me, because I see how different life looks for others. Sometimes that makes me feel like I don’t fit in either place. Not there, and not quite here.
Some of this may sound common to many Indian families or cultures. I honestly don’t know. I’m only writing about what I’ve seen and recognise as problematic, and what I would never want to carry forward.
And it starts early. Before you’re even born.
