I Wrote 7 Tiny C Programs — One of Them Changed How I Think About Performance Forever
Memory is the real boss. Speed is just a side effect.
Intro — a short story
I didn’t set out to write C.
Four years into Python, I was spoiled. One-liners. Clean abstractions. Libraries for everything. Then one Friday night, a Python script I knew was correct took 38 minutes to process a dataset that should’ve taken seconds. I did the usual dance: profiling, refactoring, caffeine.
Nothing helped.
Out of frustration, not wisdom, I rewrote the hottest loop in C. No frameworks. No magic. Just a compiler and a terminal.
It finished in 0.4 seconds.
That moment permanently rewired my brain.
This isn’t a “C is better than Python” post. It’s about performance intuition. I wrote seven tiny C programs over a weekend to automate experiments, remove guesswork, and understand what the machine actually cares about.
One of them changed how I write code in every language.
