The AI race has largely been about making models faster, larger and more capable. But what if the next breakthrough isn’t a smarter model but a more trustworthy one?

That’s exactly the problem Pramaana Labs is trying to solve.

Fresh out of stealth, the startup raised an impressive $27 million seed round led by Khosla Ventures, with participation from Accel, Nexus Venture Partners, Premji Invest, BoldCap and Unbound. For a company at such an early stage, that’s a remarkable vote of confidence not because they’re building another chatbot, but because they’re tackling one of AI’s biggest unsolved problems : verification.

The Problem with today’s AI

Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any modern LLM a question and you’ll probably receive a convincing answer.

The problem? It might be wrong.

Today’s AI systems predict the next most likely words based on patterns they’ve learned. They don’t actually know whether what they’re saying is true. This leads to hallucinations confident but incorrect answers.

That’s acceptable when asking for dinner recipes.

It’s unacceptable when you’re :

Diagnosing diseases

Reviewing financial compliance

Writing safety-critical software

Calculating taxes

Interpreting laws

In these industries, “probably right” isn’t good enough.

Pramaana’s Big Idea : AI that can prove it’s work

Pramaana describes itself as building the verification layer for AI.

Think of it like this :

Current LLMs : “Here’s my answer.”

After Pramaana AI : “Here’s my answer, here’s every rule I used, here’s the evidence behind it and here’s the mathematical proof that it satisfies all applicable constraints.”

Instead of trusting AI because it sounds intelligent, users can trust it because every conclusion is traceable, explainable and verifiable.

Verification meets LLMs

The company’s core innovation is combining two very different worlds.

1. Large Language Models

LLMs understand human language.

They can : Read documents, Understand questions, Summarise information and Generate responses

But they’re probabilistic.

2. Formal Verification

Formal verification is one of computer science’s most rigorous techniques.

It’s already used to verify : Aircraft software, Cryptographic protocols, Hardware chips and Mathematical theorems

Instead of asking whether something “looks correct” formal verification proves whether it must be correct according to defined rules.

Pramaana combines these two worlds.

LLMs : Handles natural language.

Different vision of AI

Most AI companies are racing to build more capable assistants.

Pramaana is asking a different question :

What if every AI answer came with a proof?

If successful, their work could fundamentally change how AI is used in industries where accuracy matters most.

The company often summarises it’s mission in a simple but powerful idea :

AI shouldn’t just sound right.

It should be able to prove it’s right.

How the system works

Pramaana describes its workflow in three major stages:

Step 1: Formalize

Human knowledge : Laws, regulations, tax codes, medical guidelines, contracts is converted into machine-readable logical rules. Instead of paragraphs of legal text and assumptions, the AI understands precise conditions and relationships.

Step 2 : Constrain

The AI isn’t allowed to generate any answer it wants.

Every response must remain within defined logical boundaries.

If evidence is missing, uncertainty is explicitly surfaced instead of hidden.

Step 3 : Verify

Before presenting an answer, the system performs consistency checks and proof validation. Every conclusion can be audited later.

This creates AI that is accountable rather than merely persuasive

The Brains Behind

One of the biggest reasons investors backed Pramaana Labs is the strength of it’s founding team as the company was founded by experienced AI leaders…

Ranjan Rajagopalan, formerly associated with Google Maps Moderation.

Krishnan Raghavan, who previously worked on Glean Assistant.

Sanjay Ganapathy Subramaniam, formerly a Staff Research Engineer at Google DeepMind, contributing to the Gemini family of AI models.

Their combined experience in building large-scale AI systems gives the startup a significant advantage over many early-stage competitors.

Why investors bet big

A $27 million seed round is rare, especially for a young startup. Such investments typically signal investor confidence in three areas :

  1. Exceptional founding team
  2. Large market opportunity
  3. Strong technological differentiation

Rather than funding an idea alone, investors are backing a team with proven experience in deploying AI at global scale.

Pramaana Labs represents a shift from Generative AI to Verifiable AI.

Rather than competing on who has the biggest language model, they’re building the infrastructure that could make AI dependable enough for medicine, law, taxation, finance and government.

If today’s AI era has been about teaching machines to communicate, the next era may be about teaching them to justify every conclusion they make.

And that’s the future Pramaana Labs is betting on!
