Inflation, post-pandemic changes in habits, premium formats, IMAX, and theatrical re-releases are together creating a new billion-dollar era. But that number does not always mean what we think it means.
Something strange is happening at the box office. A few years ago, earning one billion dollars worldwide felt like entering an impossibly exclusive club. When Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Avatar, or later Avengers: Endgame hit these numbers, they were no longer simply hit films. They had become cultural events. Even people who didn't go see them knew something big, something very big, was happening.
